Men's Basketball
Last Week: Splitting a pair of games last week, the RedHawks won their second straight at Millett Hall with a 55-51 triumph over Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Willie Moore led a balanced team effort with 13 points and eight rebounds. (Recap) On Tuesday, the RedHawks dropped a disappointing 94-69 decision at Eastern Michigan. Senior forward Chris Bryant led the way with a career-high 18 points off 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and added nine rebounds. (Recap) This Week: Miami hits the road for a pair of games beginning at Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The game will be televised on ASN and ESPN3. The RedHawks then travel to Toledo for their third road contest in four games for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 13. The game will be aired on BCSN, Time Warner Sports Channel and ESPN3.
Hockey
Last Week: Miami wrapped up its four-game home stand by hosting third-ranked St. Cloud State over the weekend. The RedHawks came out firing in Friday's opener, outshooting the Huskies 17-6 in the first period, but still trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. Josh Melnick evened the score 15 seconds into the second period, but SCSU netted a pair of transition goals in the final 10 minutes of the middle frame and tacked on two more to down MU 5-1 (Recap). Saturday's story appeared to be pulled from the same script as Miami trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes despite an 11-5 shot advantage. Things turned in the second period as the RedHawks got three unanswered goals from Melnick, Sean Kuraly and Kiefer Sherwood to grab a 3-1 lead that went down to 3-2 after 40 minutes. Miami killed off two dangerous St. Cloud State power plays in the third to secure a 3-2 win and a split of their weekend series (Recap). This Week: Miami finishes its non-conference slate when it heads to Bowling Green on Friday at 7 p.m.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (9-12 overall, 3-7 MAC) earned another split in its two games this past week. Needing an offensive spark off the bench the RedHawks got a career-high 14 points from sophomore guard Jazz Smith to lead them to a 55-52 win over Kent State Wednesday evening. (Recap) Miami battled hard throughout a very physical game, but the University of Akron pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 77-65 win on Saturday. Freshman point guard Leah Purvis led four in double figures with 19, while sophomore forward Molly McDonagh had her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, including eight offensive. (Recap) This Week: Miami has a pair of games awaiting it this week. On Wednesday, the Red and White travel to Northern Illinois for a contest that has a special noon (EST) start time. On Saturday, the RedHawks host Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. That is the third annual "Love Honor Care" game, as Miami looks to raise $20,000 to help support Luna Cares in its mission to help people affected by all forms of cancer.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Idle from competition. This Week: The junior team heads to Dearborn, Michigan for the Junior World Qualifier Feb. 12-13. On Sunday, Feb. 14, all three teams will showcase their competition programs at 5:15 p.m. in their Nationals Send-Off Exhibition. Admission is free to the event and it will be on the practice ice arena at the Goggin Ice Center.
Track and Field
Last Week:The squad was split Friday between the Cedarville Invitational and the Meyo Invitational. At the Meyo Invitatational, Jess Baker set a new personal best of 5-7.75 in the high jump tying her for the 10th in the Miami all-time performance list. In the shot put Arionna Darling and Ashley Frahm both set new personal bests with throws of 51-4.25 and 48-1.25. The mile saw Alesha Vovk lay down a personal best 4:59.78. The 4x400m squad of Morgan Rice, Megan Beaver, Kalliopi Kountouri and Kathie Wollney laid down their fastest time of the season. At the Cedarville Invitational the Miami men finished third in the team standings collecting 89 points while the RedHawk women finished fourth with 72. The RedHawks picked up five first place finishes at Cedarville including a 1-6 sweep in the men's mile. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks will split the squad and head to Nashville for the Music City Challenge and to Bloomington, Indiana for the Hoosier Hills.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: The RedHawks faced off last weekend against local rivals Cincinnati and Xavier. On the road Friday, Miami swept the doubles competition against the Bearcats and held a late 3-2 lead, but were unable to seal the victory, falling 4-3. In singles, sophomore Nelli Ponomareva and freshman Emily Struble extended their respective winning streaks to four and six (Recap). The team made its home debut the following day in Hamilton against Xavier, but could not withstand an outstanding performance by the Musketeers in a 6-1 loss. Junior Andreea Badileanu was a bright spot for the RedHawks, as she teamed with junior Ana Rajkovic for a comeback 7-5 doubles victory and earned her team's only point with a 6-4, 6-2 third-flight victory (Recap). This Week: Miami remains home as it welcomes 56th-ranked Marshall University on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton.
Men's Swimming and Diving
Last Week: The team took on defending MAC Champions Eastern Michigan in their last home meet of the season. Miami dropped the meet, 184-109. Seven seniors were honored with Senior Day Ceremonies before the meet began. Junior Lucas Brock turned in a win for the RedHawks in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a season-best time of 20.85. Senior Cole Fryman also turned in a first-place finish for Miami in the one-meter diving competition, tallying a total of 344.37. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks divide and conquer next weekend when a portion of the team will attend the Ohio State Invitational, Feb. 12-13, in Columbus, Ohio while another portion of the squad will travel to Muncie, Ind. to compete against Ball State.
