OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week junior hockey forward Anthony Louis and women's tennis freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 15-21.
Louis continued his second half resurgence with his first multi-goal game since his freshman campaign when he opened and closed Miami's scoring in its 4-1 win on Friday night. The junior winger put Miami on top 1-0 at the 4:26 mark when he beat Lukas Hafner on a 2-on-1 rush. Leading 3-0, Louis put an exclamation point on the win with a highlight reel goal, roofing an off-balance shot 1:06 into the third to finish up the victory.
This is the second time this season and third time in his career that Louis has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Jan. 11-17.
Shapovalova was 3-1 last weekend, seizing two wins at the No. 1 singles position. On Friday, Shapovalova earned Miami's first point of the day with her 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over the Cornhuskers' Maggy Lehmicke. The result was her second victory this season over a Big Ten No. 1 singles player, following her straight-sets victory over Paula Gutierrez on Jan. 23. In her Saturday matchup against Memphis' Hanna Sohn, she dropped the opening set but rebounded to post a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory that led to Miami's 5-2 win over the Tigers. In doubles, Shapovalova teamed with sophomore Hannah Shteyn to earn Miami's lone doubles victory against Memphis with their 6-1 win over Kathryn Hughes and Marta Morga in the second flight. The duo dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 2 doubles to Nebraska.
This is the first time this season and in her career that Shapovalova has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Feb. 29.
