OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior hockey goaltender senior Jay Williams and women's basketball guard Baleigh Reid are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 4-10.
Williams followed up his first win of the season the previous weekend by turning in two strong performances against Minnesota Duluth. The senior made his second-straight start in Friday's series opener and turned aside 36 of 37 shots to help Miami tie UMD before taking two points with a 3x3 overtime win. Williams' 36 saves were two shy of his career high. While the RedHawks were unable to finish a comeback from a 4-0 hole on Saturday, Williams was solid in relief by turning away all six shots he faced to make sure Miami didn't cede more ground as it eventually pulled within 4-2.
This is the first time this season and fifth time in his career that Williams has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Feb. 9-15, 2015.
Reid continued to be Miami's leading scorer, averaging 15.5 points this week as the RedHawks split their two games. Against Northern Illinois on Wednesday, Reid led Miami to its first MAC win of the season, finishing with 15 points, while also bringing in five rebounds. While, the Red and White struggled offensively against Ball State on Saturday, Reid still was able to find a way to put the ball in the basket. She finished with 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting and also had three steals and two rebounds against the Cardinals. Reid has now led Miami in scoring in 11 of its 14 games this season.
This is the fourth time this season and seventh time in in her career that Reid has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She has won it the last three times in a row.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Jan. 18.
