OXFORD, Ohio--The University of Cincinnati (2-1) scored a touchdown with 1:13 to play to lift the Bearcats to a 37-33 win at Yager Stadium on Saturday evening.
The RedHawks captured a 33-30 lead with 7:21 to play, but Cincinnati's Hayden Moore took the ball in for Cincinnati from 1 yard out with just over a minute to play to ice an 8-play, 66-yard game-winning drive for the Bearcats in the 120th playing of the Battle for the Victory Bell.
Miami amassed 448 yards of total offense. Senior quarterback Drew Kummer threw for 176 yards and three touchdowns, completing 11-of-25 passes, while sophomore wide receiver Sam Martin hauled in four catches for 124 yards and a touchdown for the Red and White. The RedHawks had a balanced running game with four players combining for 220 yards. Junior linebacker TJ Williams led Miami with 12 tackles that included seven solo stops.
Cincinnati struck first as Mike Boone ran the ball in from 4 yards out for a touchdown. Andrew Gantz's extra point put the Bearcats up 7-0 at 12:47 in the first quarter.
Miami retaliated on the next drive as Kummer hit junior wide receiver Sam Shisso on a 21-yard pass. It was Shisso's first career touchdown, which capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive for the RedHawks. Freshman Nick Dowd kicked his first career extra point to knot the game at seven apiece with 9:59 to go in the first quarter.
Set up by Boone's 74-yard rush, UC's Tion Green ran the ball in from 2 yards out to help propel the Bearcats to a 14-7 advantage with 2:04 to play in the opening quarter.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, the RedHawks cut the gap when Dowd connected on a 22-yard field goal at 14:11 to pull Miami to within four at 14-10. Redshirt freshman quarterback Gus Ragland broke loose on a 36-yard run on MU's third drive of the quarter, while freshman quarterback Billy Bahl connected with sophomore wide receiver Sam Martin on a 40-yard pass before hitting sophomore tight end Ryan Smith on a 14-yard touchdown pass to hand the RedHawks their first lead with 7:15 to go in the half. Dowd's extra point put MU ahead, 17-14.
After Cincinnati tied the game with a 42-yard field goal at the 4:17 mark, Kummer fired a 75-yard touchdown pass to Martin on the first play of the ensuing drive, taking just 12 ticks off the clock. The kick failed leaving Miami with a 23-17 lead at 4:05 in the first half. UC capped a high-scoring second quarter that saw a combined 36 points scored by both teams with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Gunner Kiel to Chris Moore with 54 seconds left in the half. The Gantz PAT was good to give the Bearcats a 24-23 edge heading into the locker room.
The flurry of scoring continued in the second half. Cincinnati extended its lead to 27-23 off a 46-yard field goal by Gantz at the 10:28 mark of the third quarter. After redshirt freshman running back Kenny Young broke free for a 35-yard run on the opening play of the drive, Kummer found Smith in the end zone with 8:26 to go in the third quarter on a 2-yard pass to cap the eight-play, 65-yard series. Senior Kaleb Patterson hit the extra point to hand the Red and White a 30-27 lead. Cincinnati came back to knot the game 30-30 at the 1:29 in the third on a Gantz 24-yard field goal.
Neither team committed a turnover through the first three quarters, but the teams combined for five turnovers in the fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman linebacker Brad Earnest picked off UC's Hayden Moore and returned it 17 yards to the Cincinnati 37-yard line with 14:30 to play. On Miami's ensuing drive, Kummer was intercepted at the Bearcats' 3-yardline by Zach Edwards who returned it 29 yards. The Bearcats fumbled on their next drive as senior defensive end Bryson Albright recovered the ball on the Miami 47-yard line.
With 8:10 to play, Albright recovered his second fumble of the game on the Cincinnati 7-yard line. Patterson kicked a 21-yard field goal with 7:12 to play to give Miami a 33-30 edge. The Bearcats drove the ball down the field, but sophomore defensive back Buchi Okafor intercepted the ball in the end zone, returning it to the 18-yard line with 5:39 to play.
Miami was unable to capitalize on the next offensive drive and punted with 4:14 to go. Cincinnati went 66 yards in 3:06 to score with just over a minute to play. The RedHawks got the ball back and began their drive on their own 24-yard line with 1:08 to play. MU moved the ball just five yards in four plays, giving the ball back to the Bearcats, who took a knee twice to run out the final 48 seconds of the game.
Cincinnati finished with 545 yards of total offense.
The RedHawks round out non-conference action when they travel to Western Kentucky University for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 26.
