Tennis Closes Miami Invitational with Solid Sunday

OXFORD, Ohio -- After a rain storm suspended the first day of action at the Miami Invitational, the Miami University women's tennis team returned Sunday to post a solid finish at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts.
In matches that began on Saturday, the RedHawks took four of six singles matches against Xavier, before winning two in doubles versus the Musketeers. Finally, Miami swept the Lipscomb Bisons in the final singles matches of the event. In total for the weekend, the team posted a 17-2 singles record while going 6-5 in doubles matchups.
Against Xavier, the RedHawks overcame losses in the first two flights to take the remaining matches against their familiar opponents. Junior Andreea Badileanu put aside a tough second set to best Amina Ismail, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in third flight. Despite trailing when play resumed, senior Ana Rajkovic came back to beat Lauren Ghidotti, 7-5, 6-2. In the final two flights, newcomers Anzhelika Shapovalova (6-0, 6-4) and Nastia Vasyukhina (6-2, 6-2) were victorious.
The two teams immediately faced off in doubles competition, with the RedHawks winning in second and third flights. Badileanu and sophomore Nelli Ponomareva beat Ghidotti and Alex Brinker in a 6-2 result. Freshman Emily Struble teamed with Rajkovic for a 6-3 victory over Cristina Di Lorenzo and Zoe Manion.
The weekend's action came to a close with an unbeaten singles session against Lipscomb. In second flight, Badileanu finished unbeaten in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Bisons' Katerina Kandyba. Rajkovic (6-3, 6-3) and Shapovalova (6-4, 6-3) also completed spotless weekend records with results against Danielle Kinnen and Lorena Djuknic respectively. Ponomareva took her third flight match with a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory over Thabile Tshatedi and Struble finished her first tournament as a RedHawk by beating Kathryn Evans, 6-1, 6-2. The final match of the event saw sophomore Hannah Shteyn come back to defeat Laura Kent, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In other action, Lipscomb returned from Saturday's suspension to take four of six singles matches from Butler. The Bisons followed that up by winning two in doubles against the Bulldogs. The final matches of the day saw Xavier sweep Butler with six straight-sets victories.
The RedHawks will now rest for one week before returning to play on Friday Sept. 25 in two tournaments held in Virginia. The team will be split into two groups, with one playing in the UVA Invitational at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the other competing in the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg.
