JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Amelia Strickler is hitting the national stage for the second time this calendar year thanks to her performance on Thursday.
Strickler placed 10th in the shot put with a toss of 53-10.25 at the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet. Her second throw of the day clinched her an automatic trip to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships that run from June 10-13. This marks Strickler's first-career appearance at the national outdoor meet and the second time she has hit the national spotlight as she qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Two more Miami competitors were also in action on the first day of the meet. Kenny Glenn took to the long jump runway and finished 44th with a top leap of 21-6 1/4. Meanwhile, Joe Stewart closed the evening in the 10,000m, where he placed 19th in a time of 30:37.43.
Glenn and Stewart both saw their strong outdoor seasons come to a close with their first-career postseason appearances on the track. The RedHawks have one more competitor going on Friday as Sam Chester runs the first round of the 110m hurdles at 5:30 p.m.
