YPSILANTI, Mich. – Miami University’s women’s tennis team overcame its toughest challenge of the Mid-American Conference season to remain undefeated, beating Eastern Michigan, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Chippewa Club. Friday’s match marked the first meeting between the teams since Miami’s 4-2 victory in last year’s MAC Women’s Tennis Championship. The RedHawks (11-6, 5-0 MAC) won their tenth consecutive MAC regular-season match, but faced their closest competition since a 4-3 victory against the Eagles (5-12, 1-3 MAC) on April 11, 2014.
After an Eastern Michigan victory in first flight doubles, Miami responded with two 6-4 victories to clinch the opening point. Senior Alix Thurman and freshman Hannah Shteyn defeated Ani Gogvadze and Anna Veleva in second flight to pick up their seven consecutive victory. Another streak was extended as senior Ramona Costea and sophomore Andreea Badileanu picked up their 11th straight triumph, dropping Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo in the deciding match.
The RedHawks would move on to face a strong challenge from the Eagles in the singles portion of competition. Klara Supejova’s victory over Alix Thurman tied the match at one before senior Christine Guerrazzi defeated Andrea Martinovska, 6-2, 6-2, in second flight to regain the lead for the remainder of play. In a surprising result, Badileanu’s 11-match winning streak was snapped by Gogvadze in a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 contest. Eventually, Costea’s 6-4, 6-2 victory against Barcelo and Shteyn’s 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 decision against Friedrichs would seal a tight win for Miami. The final result of the day saw junior Ana Rajkovic fall to Veleva in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 match.
Miami will now return home for a battle of the MAC’s top two teams when they face the Toledo Rockets on Sunday, April 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts. The Rockets (13-6, 4-1) enter play with wins in seven of their last nine matches after defeating Bowling Green, 7-0, on Friday. Check MURedHawks.com for live stats and a recap of Sunday’s match.
