Colonels Ground RedHawks, 8-6

RICHMOND, Ky. – A five-run fourth inning for Eastern Kentucky helped lead the Colonels over the RedHawks (9-32, 7-11 MAC), 8-6 Tuesday at Turkey Hughes Field.
EKU got the game’s first runs in the bottom of the first. A Shea Sullivan sac fly put the Colonels up, 1-0 through one inning of play.
Miami took the lead in the top of the third. With one out, Scott Slappey singled into center field, followed by well-earned walk by Brooks Urich. After a popout, Jake Romano cranked a home run over the right field wall, giving the RedHawks a 3-1 lead through two and half innings. The home run in Romano’s third of the season. EKU responded in their half of the inning, tying things up at three apiece on a triple by TJ Alas and a sac fly be Ben Fisher.
EKU took their second lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. A Logan Starnes one-run double, a Mandy Alvarez two-run single and a Taylor Blair two-run single plated five in the inning for the Colonels, pushing them in front, 8-3, through four innings of play.
The RedHawks cut into the lead in the top of the fifth when a Urich groundout allowed Slappey to score. The Red & White scored again in the top of the eighth. Adam Yacek tripled to score Romano. Then, Max Andresen doubled to left center, scoring Yacek and cutting the EKU lead to 8-6.
Brian Thene (1-2) took the loss for Miami. He went three and third innings, while surrendering eight earned runs.
The RedHawks return to action Wednesday as they take on EKU at McKie Field at Hayden Park and look to split the series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
