OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week senior baseball pitcher Ryan Powers and junior softball pitcher Amber Logemann are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of April 20-26.
In a weekend that featured great pitcher’s duels, Powers pitch a gem for the RedHawks Sunday in game two of their doubleheader. The 6-foot-5 righty pitched nine shutout innings. The complete game was the first of his career. Kent State leadoff hitters went just 1-9 against Powers, with the lone hit coming on a single in the top of the seventh inning. He allowed six hits, while striking out eight and walking just one. Last season, Powers earned Second Team All-MAC honors.
This is the first time this season and in his career that Powers has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week.
Logemann had the best weekend of her career as she led Miami to clinching a spot in the Mid-American Conference Championship with a perfect 4-0 week. Overall, the RedHawks were 5-0 in games that she pitched in. She threw 33.0 innings during the week and did not allow an earned run in all but one of them, finishing with a 0.64 ERA and 27 strikeouts. After gutting through a 5-3 victory against Butler on Tuesday, in which all the runs were scored in the seventh inning, Logemann became unhittable during the weekend. She did not allow a single earned run in the four victories and only five hits in 26 innings pitched. Against Akron on Friday, she pitched all 10 innings and allowed only one hit as Miami finally took a 1-0 victory. In the nightcap with the score tied at two in the fifth she came back in and once again held the Zips at bay. She allowed only two hits until the RedHawks scored in the 10th to finish off a 3-2 win. The next day Logemann threw a two-hitter against Ohio in a 4-1 win, with the only run being scored on an error. On Sunday she came into the game with the Bobcats in the fifth inning with Miami holding a 2-1 lead. She did not allow Ohio a hit the rest of the way as the RedHawks exploded for eight more runs in a 10-1 win. Logemann picked up her second save of the season for her efforts. Allowing only 15 hits and nine walks in her 33.0 innings pitched, she finished with an impressive 0.73 WHIP for the week.
This is the second time this season and second time in her career that Logemann has been named Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it the week of March 23-29.
