OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week junior baseball outfielder Jake Romano and tennis senior Alix Thurman are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of April 13-19.
Romano was instrumental in the RedHawks’ success over the last week. He notched his first career home run in Wednesday’s loss vs. Xavier, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. This past weekend at Akron, he hit what turned out to be the game-deciding hit in Sunday’s rubber match, belting a home run over the right field wall in the top of the 13th inning. The home run have the RedHawks an 8-7 advantage and a MAC series win. In total, Romano had multi-hit efforts in each of the five games he played in, batting .478 on the week. In addition, he slugged .826 to go with six runs, two doubles, four runs batted in and two home runs.
This is the first time this season and third time in his career that Romano has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He previously earned the honor for the week of Feb. 17-23, 2014.
In the RedHawks’ final regular-season match, senior Alix Thurman came up with two critical wins to lift Miami to a 4-3 decision over Ball State in MU’s lone match of the week. A week after securing their 21st MAC regular-season crown, the RedHawks’ win against Ball State clinched their 20th outright title and pushed them to 8-0 in conference play as they head into this weekend’s MAC Tournament. Thurman and freshman Hannah Shteyn battled to a 6-4 decision at No. 2 doubles in the deciding match for the doubles point to give MU a 1-0 edge heading in to singles play. With the win, Thurman and Shteyn moved to 7-0 in MAC play in doubles action. After falling 6-3 in her first set No. 1 singles and with the match tied 3-3 and the result ultimately coming down to her match, Thurman battled back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to seize the 4-3 win for Miami. The win over the Cardinals marked Miami's 13th straight MAC regular-season win dating back to last season.
This is the second time this season and fourth time in her career that Thurman has been named Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it the week of March 2-8.
