AKRON, Ohio – The RedHawks fell to Akron, 7-4 Friday in their series opener against the Zips. The loss drops Miami’s record to 6-28 on the season, including a 4-9 conference record.
The Zips got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. A Dom Iero sac fly put Akron up, 1-0 through one inning of play. Akron extended their lead in the bottom of the third. A three-run home run by the Zips’ Joey Havrilak put them up, 4-0 through three innings. Akron tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth on an error, going up 5-0.
The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the sixth. Kendall Johnson led off the inning with a double, followed by a Scott Slappey walk. Johnson advanced to third on a wild pitch during Slappey’s at-bat. Then, a Jake Romano single through the right side allowed Johnson to score. Slappey advanced to third on the play. The next at-bat, Ryan Elble hit a sac fly to left center, scoring Slappey. Miami minimized the Zips lead to 5-2. Akron got one back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a Billy Salem single.
The RedHawks earned another run in the top of the eighth. It was Elble again, notching a sac fly and scoring Romano. Akron held a 6-3 lead heading in to the bottom of the eighth. However, the Akron lead would grow larger in their half of the eighth as an RBI single allowed the Zips to plate their seventh run of the game.
The Redhawks got a run back in the top of the ninth. With Matt Honchel on second, Max Andresen came in to pinch hit and reached on an error and Honchel scored on the play, cutting the Akron lead to, 7-4. However, that would be all the scoring as the Red & White fell to the Zips in the series opener.
