Louisville's bats lead Cards past MU, 16-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A nine-run bottom of the seventh inning for Louisville (22-7, 11-1 ACC) helped down the RedHawks (4-20, 2-4 MAC), 16-5 Tuesday night.

Louisville did the game’s first damage in the bottom of the first. With one out and a runner on second, a triple down the right field line allowed the baserunner to score. The next at-bat saw the Cards hit a double to the right side, netting another score for them. The UL lead stood at 2-0 after one inning of play.
The RedHawks stuck back in the top half of the second. Chad Sedio led off the inning with a single and a throwing error allowed him to reach second base. Then, Adam Yacek single to right to put runners on the corners. One out later, Gary Russo doubled to right center, scoring Sedio and Yacek and tying the game up at two apiece. The Russo RBI was his third in the last two games. He homered on Sunday against Central Michigan. A wild pitch would allow Russo to score, giving Miami the 3-2 lead through one and half innings.
UL tied things up in the bottom of third on a solo home run. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, a double allowed the Cards to take back the lead, 4-3.
Louisville extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth. A wild pitch, a double and a sac fly plated three runs for the Cards. Their lead stood at 7-3 after five innings.
The Cards would strike again in the bottom of the seventh. A lead off solo home run stretched the UL lead to 8-3. Then, the Cards were able to load the bases and earn two-run double. Later in the inning, with one out, UL was able to load the bases again. Then, a bases-loaded walk allowed them to score another run. The very next at-bat, a two-run double earned Louisville their sixth run of the inning. Before the inning was over, a single, a groundout and a double allowed the Cards to score three more runs. With nine total in the inning, UL took a commanding 16-3 lead into the eighth inning.
The RedHawks cut into the lead in the top of the ninth. Russo led off the inning with a single and then Kendall Johnson doubled down the left field line, scoring Russo. Later on in the inning, a Steve Sada single scored Johnson. Two runs would be all Miami would earn in the top of the ninth, falling 16-5 to Louisville.
Russo, Sedio and Johnson all notched multi-hit efforts, going a combined 6-for-12 with four runs and three runs batted in.
The RedHawks return to action tomorrow as they head home to host the Thundering Herd of Marshall at Hayden Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
