Hockey
Last Week: The fifth-ranked RedHawks closed the regular season with a home split against No. 1 North Dakota. Despite outshooting UND 44-27 overall and 39-16 in the final two periods, MU was unable to dig out of a 2-0 hole as Sean Kuraly’s power play goal was the only puck to slip past Zane McIntyre, who finished the night with 43 saves to hold back Miami in a 2-1 setback (Recap). Senior Night was another story on Saturday as Miami’s class of 2015 scored the its first four goals, three of which came from captain Austin Czarnik for his first-career hat trick. The senior evened the score with 2:45 left in the first period and sandwiched a pair of short-handed goals around a Blake Coleman tally to leave the RedHawks with a 4-2 lead after two periods. A 5-on-3 goal by UND 32 seconds into the third period made it a one-goal game, but Czarnik assisted on a Riley Barber tally just over a minute later to help secure a 6-3 win as Miami finished the regular season in second place in the NCHC (Recap). This Week: Miami begins the NCHC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and hosts Western Michigan for a best-of-three playoff series that runs Friday (7:35 p.m.), Saturday (7:05) and, if necessary, Sunday (7:05 p.m.).
Men’s Basketball
Last Week: The RedHawks split a pair of games to conclude the regular season last week. Senior guard Will Sullivan had his third career double-double on Senior Night with 15 points and 10 rebounds to help Miami erase a 10-point second-half deficit in a 70-63 win against Akron last Tuesday. (Recap) Sullivan scored 19 points to lead all RedHawks as Miami suffered a 95-65 setback at Ohio in the regular-season finale on Friday night. (Recap) This Week: The No. 9 seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, Miami hits the road to play a first-round game at No. 8 seed Eastern Michigan at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9. If Miami wins it will advance to Cleveland to face the winner of No. 12 Ball State at No. 5 Bowling Green at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11 in the second round. Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (7-22 overall, 4-14 MAC) dropped a pair of games on the road to conclude the regular season last week. Miami could not overcome early foul trouble and Akron’s hot shooting from behind the arc as the Zips defeated the RedHawks, 67-55, Wednesday evening. (Recap) Miami fell in its regular season finale to Ohio, 75-60, on Saturday. (Recap) This Week: Miami opens MAC Tournament play as the 10th seed by traveling to seventh seed Toledo on Monday at 7 p.m. With a victory, the RedHawks will advance to Quicken Loans Arena, where the remainder of the tournament will take place beginning Wednesday. Softball
Last Week: Miami (9-7 overall) was in the Pacific Northwest, where it went 2-3 at the Husky Classic. The RedHawks battled hard in both of their games to begin the Husky Classic, but extra innings proved to be its undoing on Friday. The RedHawks fell to Ohio State, 8-3, in the opener and Seattle, 4-1, in the nightcap. (Recap) Miami arned a split during day two of the Husky Classic on Saturday. The RedHawks defeated Seattle, 4-2, in the opener. They then fell to 19th-ranked Washington, 15-1, in five innings. (Recap) Miami had a successful conclusion to the Husky Classic on Sunday with an 8-5 victory over Seattle. (Recap) This Week: Miami opens its home schedule when it hosts Louisville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The RedHawks will put on the Miami Invitational this weekend at the Miami Softball Stadium. On Friday, the RedHawks will take on Robert Morris at 3:30 p.m. and North Dakota at 5:45 p.m. On Saturday, Miami faces Oakland at 6 p.m. and Detroit at 8:15 p.m. The ‘Hawks conclude their home tournament with a game against Dayton on Sunday at 3:45 p.m.
Golf
Last Week: Miami was idle last week. This Week: The RedHawks are in Bluffton, South Carolina for the Colleton River Collegiate beginning on Monday. Miami then heads to Naples, Florida for the Talis Park Challenge beginning on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
Last Week: Miami swept its opponents over the weekend to extend its win streak to three straight. The RedHawks earned their second-straight shutout victory on Friday, blanking Illinois State 7-0. (Recap) Miami collected an impressive 5-2 win on Sunday over 71st-ranked Wisconsin. Senior Alix Thurman battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set at No. 1 singles to snap UW’s Lauren Chypyha’s 11-match win streak with her three-set win. (Recap) This Week: Miami hits the road for a pair of matches in Huntington, W. Va., facing No. 70 Marshall on Friday at 4 p.m. before facing Winthrop the following day in a neutral-site match.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
Last Week: Miami finished fifth at the Mid-American Conference Championships held in Geneva, Ohio. Senior Joe Baumgartner was the MAC Champion in the 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle, while teaming up with sophomores Lucas Brock and Jack Strauss and freshman Ross Westrick for a first-place finish and school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. (Recaps: Day One, Day Two, Day Three, Day Four) This Week: Miami looks to have individuals advance to the NCAA Championships.
Women’s Track & Field
Last Week: Amelia Strickler’s indoor season is lasting a little while longer as the junior will throw the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted by Arkansas. Strickler is seeded 12th in the field of 18 competitors (Release). This Week: Strickler is slated to throw the shot put and gun for All-America honors on Saturday.
Baseball
Last Week: The RedHawks (2-8, 0-0 MAC) traveled to Columbia, S.C. for a three-game series against highly-ranked South Carolina. In game one, Ryan Powers dominated, pitching 7.1 innings and allowed just four hits and two earned runs. However, Miami could not get on the scoreboard, falling 2-0 Friday (Recap). In game two on Saturday, a Gamecock grand slam led South Carolina over Miami, 7-0 (Recap). The RedHawks found some more offense Sunday and capitalized on a few errors to grab an early 2-0 lead. However, the Gamecocks would go on to outscore the Red & White 5-1 the rest of the way to take the victory, 5-3 (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks travel to Ball State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Then, the RedHawks will travel to East Tennessee State for a three-game weekend series.
Women's Swimming
Last Week: Miami University women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up competition in the Tim Meyers Ohio Senior Championships held at the Nixon Aquatic Center over the weekend. Miami hosted the meet involving numerous teams from around the state. Freshman Lainey Massaro recorded the only win for the RedHawks on Friday, clocking in at 1:03.58 in the 100-yard breaststroke. She also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday, with a time of 2:19.89. Up Next: The Zone C Diving event takes place in West Lafayette, Ind., from Thursday, March 12 to Saturday, March 14. The Women’s NCAA Championships are from Thursday, March 19 to Saturday, March 21 in Greensboro, N.C.
