COLUMBIA, S.C. – Throwing errors played a big factor again as the RedHawks (2-7, 0-0 MAC) fell to the Gamecocks, 7-0 on Saturday.
The Gamecocks got the game’s first runs in the bottom of the second. A pickoff attempt at first base went awry and escaped the infield, scoring a baserunner from second and advancing another runner to third. Jacob Banks settled in and got out of the inning without any further damage. After two, the Gamecocks were up, 2-0.
South Carolina extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Scheller came on to pitch for Jacob Banks after the Gamecocks loaded the bases. Another RedHawk throwing error allowed two runs to score. The lead was furthered in the bottom of the next inning when South Carolina’s Connor Bright belted a grand slam to left center. The lead stood at 7-0 after seven innings.
That would be all the scoring as the RedHawks were shutout for the second straight game. Banks played well despite taking the loss. He allowed just three hits in five and a third innings pitched. The three runs he allowed were all unearned.
The RedHawks return to the diamond tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. for the series finale at South Carolina. The game will be available to watch on SEC Network+ and WatchESPN.
