Hockey
Last Week: Miami’s return to Minneapolis was a fruitful endeavor as the RedHawks claimed their second conference tournament title and first Frozen Faceoff crown in program history over the weekend. A balanced outing saw eleven Miami skaters post at least one point as the RedHawks got multi-point nights from Anthony Louis (1g, 1a), Austin Czarnik (1g, 1a), Matthew Caito (2a) and Kevin Morris (2a) to post a 6-3 win over Denver in Friday’s semifinal. The Pioneers pulled the score to 4-3 early in the third period, but a nifty pass by Louis set up a Louie Belpedio goal to open up some breathing room and Alex Gacek’s empty netter sent Miami to the finals (Recap). Things were a bit tougher in the title game as upstart St. Cloud State took 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first and second periods, but Blake Coleman scored all the goals the Red and White needed, netting a hat trick to put them up 3-2 midway through the second period. Miami’s penalty kill played a large part in holding onto the lead, fighting off a five-minute major late in the middle stanza and killing off three power plays in the third period to hold on for the win. Coleman was named NCHC Tournament MVP and was joined by Czarnik and Belpedio on the All-Tournament Team (Recap). This Week: Miami’s surge in the conference tournament earned it a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The RedHawks will be sent out east to take on Providence in Providence, R.I. on Saturday. Should they advance, the East Regional Final will pit them against either Denver or Boston College on Sunday.
