CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced its Distinguished Scholar Athlete Awards for all fall sports on Friday. For Miami, 14 student-athletes among six different sports earned the honor.
The following RedHawks earned Distinguished Scholar Athlete honors: Joe Stewart (men’s cross country), Laura Bess (women’s cross country), Jess Hoover (women’s cross country), Anna Lamb (women’s cross country), Bea Dechant (field hockey), Ali Froede (field hockey), Kelsey Dinges (soccer), Haley Walter (soccer), Courtney Zanotti (soccer), Sarah Chaney (volleyball), Paige Hill (volleyball), Jenny Ingle (volleyball), Meg Riley (volleyball) and Kent Kern (football).
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a first-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the fall sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the ‘best of the best’ of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2014-15 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
The MAC will announce Distinguished Scholar Athletes for its winter and spring sports at the conclusion of the 2014-15 athletic calendar.
