BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The RedHawks (2-5, 0-0 MAC) went down early but rallied back to defeat Furman Saturday, 4-3. A three-run fourth inning by Miami proved to be the difference-maker.
An RBI single got Furman on the board early in the top of the first. The next at-bat, the Paladins hit a home run to left field, extending their lead to 3-0. Miami responded in their half of the inning when Steve Sada stole home from third when Furman tried to throw out Matt Honchel who was stealing second base. The first inning ended with Furman up, 3-1.
The RedHawks came out firing in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Elble doubled to left field, scoring Honchel from second and advancing Chad Sedio to third. After a Tommy Ricciardi walk loaded the bases, Steve Sada singled, scoring Sedio and Elble. The Red & White came out of the frame with a 4-3 lead.
The Paladins threatened in the top of the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, Brian Thene came on in relief for the RedHawks. It took only one pitch to shut down the threat as Thene got a groundball and Ricciardi threw the batter out.
The Red & White's big fourth inning held up, leading them to a 4-3 win. After a shaky first inning, Jacob Banks settled in and was lights out the rest of the game. He notched the win to improve to 1-2 on the season. Will Schierholz came on in the top of the ninth to close things out and shut the door on the Paladins to earn his first career save as a RedHawk.
The Red & White return to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Maryland-Eastern Shore in their final game of the Fighting Camel Classic.
