BUIES CREEK, N.C. – An early offensive surge by Campbell proved to be too much to overcome as the RedHawks (1-5, 0-0 MAC) were defeated by the Fighting Camels, 7-2.
Campbell got on the scoreboard first after an errant throw to second. The RedHawks were trying to catch a stealing baserunner but the ball got past the infield, scoring the runner from third. The Fighting Camels extended their lead on an RBI single. With two outs in the inning, the RedHawks were looking to get out of the frame without further damage, but a popup to shallow left field got caught in the sun and fell to the ground, scoring another run. The Fighting Camels came out of the first inning with a 3-0 lead.
The lead would grow in the bottom of the second as a solo shot to left field put the Fighting Camels up, 4-0. The next score of the game came in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of Campbell, a sac fly that put them up, 5-0.
The RedHawks would get on the board in the top of the fifth. In his second career at-bat, Brooks Urich hit an RBI single that scored Jake Romano. The next at-bat, a Steven Sada fielder’s choice, scored Kendall Johnson and cut the Campbell lead to 5-2.
Throwing errors continued to hamper the RedHawks as a miscue off a bunt put the Fighting Camels up 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth. A fielder’s choice would see Campbell add another run before the inning was over, putting them up 7-2 through five innings.
Campbell nearly got another run in the bottom of the eighth, but a great throw by Urich from left field gunned down the Campbell baserunner at home plate.
The RedHawks got a man on in the top of the ninth but could not rally. Ryan Powers (1-2) took the loss for the Red & White.
