When the RedHawks compete in the U.S. National Championships in Providence, R.I., this weekend, all three teams are vying for national titles.
The RedHawk senior team seeks to earn their 11th overall berth to the ISU World Championship with a top-two finish at nationals. Miami has had a strong season and tries for the program's fourth national crown at the senior level and first since 2008-09. Miami finished third at the Mozart Cup and earned first-place finishes at the Dr. Porter Classic and also fin the short program at the Colonial Classic.
Miami's collegiate team has dominated the division and is the 10-time defending national champion in search of the program's 17th national collegiate title. The collegiate team already owns the U.S. Figure Skating record for most consecutive national titles in any discipline at any level of skating and tries to extend that mark. The collegiate team has placed first at every event they’ve participated in this season.
The RedHawk junior team also looks for gold this weekend. A finish among the top three would be a first for a Miami junior team at the national championships. The junior team earned gold at the Mid-America Championships earlier this season.
The RedHawk senior team performs their short program to the song “The World is Ours”. Their free skate program is an Elvis medley to “Heartbreak Hotel”, “A Little Less Conversation”, and “Blue Suede Shoes”.
Miami’s collegiate team skates its program to music from the movie “Nine” featuring the songs “Cinema Italiano” and “Be Italian”.
For the junior short program, the RedHawks will skate to the “Jock Jams Megamix”. The free skate program is choreographed to music from the musical “Aladdin”.
