OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week men’s basketball junior guard Eric Washington and women’s basketball’s freshman guard Baleigh Reid are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Feb. 16-22.
Washington was a key component to a pair of big RedHawk road wins last week as Miami extended its win streak to a season-long three games. He scored six of his points over the final 2:48 to help secure the win at then-MAC leader Bowling Green last Wednesday. Plagued by foul trouble that limited his first-half minutes, Washington helped Miami turn a nine-point deficit late in the first half against the Falcons to an 11-point win, which included four assists. Washington scored 21 points to lead all players in a big win at Akron that marked Miami’s third road win of the season and second in as many games and also snapped an 11-game losing streak at James A. Rhodes Arena that dated back to the 2003 season. He helped Miami erase an 11-point first-half deficit and sunk a triple that ignited a 9-0 run to end the opening half to take a one-point lead into the locker room against the Zips. In a tight second half, Washington sunk a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play in regulation to send the game into overtime where he went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and assisted on Will Sullivan’s go-ahead triple as MU outscored Akron 9-4 in the extra period for its second overtime win of the season. For the week, Washington averaged 14.5 ppg, 4.5 apg and 3.5 rpg while shooting 92.3 percent from the free-throw line.
This is the third time this season and third time in his career that Washington has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Jan. 26-Feb. 1.
Reid continued her amazing play as of late as the RedHawks continued to show improvement in a 1-1 week. She averaged 16.5 points per game and shot 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from the field. Against Eastern Michigan, Reid scored a team-high 15 points and also had two assists in 33 minutes of action. She was even better as Miami defeated Buffalo on the road on Saturday. Reid finished with a career-high 18 points on 5-for-9 shooting. She brought in four rebounds and had an assist and a steal in 29 minutes of action. Reid is averaging 14.4 points per game over her past seven games.
This is the third time this season and in her career that Reid has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor. It is the second straight week she has won the honor.
