For their performances last week cross country senior Joe Stewart and freshman field hockey midfielder Paula Portugal are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1.
Stewart earned First-Team All-MAC honors for the second consecutive year with his second-straight third-place finish at the MAC Cross Country Championship last weekend. The senior clocked a time of 24:21.15 over the 8K course in Akron to lead the Miami scoring contingent. Stewart's effort led a much improved Miami squad to a third-place team finish at the meat, a four spot jump from its seventh-place showing a year ago.
This is the second time this season and fifth time in his career that Stewart has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Sept. 7-13.
Portugal has been nothing short of outstanding since joining the RedHawks in 2015. The Madrid, Spain native added to an already impressive season by chipping in two goals in the Red & White's regular season finale at conference rival Ohio. Miami went on to claim a 3-0 win over the Bobcats to earn a share of the MAC regular season title and the No. 2 seed for the upcoming MAC Tournament (Nov. 6-7). Portugal now has ten goals and 23 points on the season, ranking her second on the team in both categories. Her three game-winning goals leads the team. She has also dished out three assists.
This is the first time this season and in her career that Portugal has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Nov. 9.
