OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior cross country runner Joe Stewart and redshirt freshman volleyball setter Mackenzie Zielinski are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 9-15.
Stewart punched his ticket to the NCAA Cross Country Championship for the second year in a row as he turned in an amazing 10K race at the Great Lakes Regional Championship over the weekend. Stewart clocked a personal-best cross country 10K time of 30:27.4 to finish fourth in the 208 runner field. He will try to earn All-American honors for the first time in his career in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday. This is the third time this season and sixth time in his career that Stewart has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1.
Zielinski had an amazing week defensively, leading the RedHawks with 42 digs. That was an average of 4.67 per set. Despite being a setter in the Miami's 6-2 system and only playing three out of the six rotations, the opposition continued to find her. Zielinski proved she was up to the task, finishing with a career-high 19 digs in the Red and White's 3-1 win over Bowling Green. She made it a double-double by contributing 22 assists. She was even better in the thrilling 3-2 win over WMU on Saturday. She broke her career high-again with 23 digs and had another double-double with 17 assists.
This is the first time this season and and in her career that Zielinski has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Nov. 23.
