KALAMAZOO, Mich.--Scoring 10 unanswered points in the first quarter, the Miami University football team took an early 10-7 lead on the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday afternoon at Waldo Stadium. The RedHawks (1-7; 0-4 Mid-American Conference) were unable to capitalize on their early lead, falling to the Broncos, 35-13.
After a MU fumble that was recovered by WMU (4-3; 3-0 MAC) on the RedHawks' 8-yard line on the first drive of the game, the Broncos struck first as Daniel Braverman scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Zach Terrell at the 13:31 mark of the first quarter.
Miami retaliated on the following drive. Facing third-and-15 on its own 13-yard line, freshman quarterback Billy Bahl hit sophomore wide receiver Sam Martin on an 18-yard pass for the first down. Redshirt freshman running back Alonzo Smith broke loose on a 38-yard scamper to move the ball into Bronco territory. Redshirt freshman quarterback Gus Ragland then found sophomore tight end Ryan Smith on an 18-yard pass, and Ragland carried the ball in from 8 yards out for the touchdown with 10:51 to go in the opening quarter. Senior Kaleb Patterson's extra point knotted the game at seven apiece.
On their next drive, the RedHawks started from their own 20-yard line but quickly found themselves on the WMU 20-yard line as Bahl connected with Martin on a 60-yard pass opening play of the series. Although the Red and White was unable to find the end zone, Patterson booted a 31-yard field goal to hand the RedHawks a 10-7 lead with 3:44 to go in the first quarter.
WMU scored three unanswered touchdowns over the next two quarters to take a lead it would not relinquish. Terrell found Carrington Thomas on a 6-yard touchdown pass at the 13:04 mark of the second quarter, and Jamauri Bogan carried the ball into the end zone from 17 yards out with 4:42 to go in the first half to give the Broncos a 21-10 halftime lead. With 9:43 to go in the third quarter, Terrell hit Braverman for their second touchdown connection of the game, this one a 5-yard reception to give WMU a 28-13 lead after the Andrew Haldeman PAT.
A 38-yard field goal by Patterson with 7:02 to go in the third quarter cut the MU deficit to 28-13, but the Broncos tacked on one more touchdown with 2:11 to go in the game as Bogan carried the ball in from 3 yards out to make the final tally 35-13.
Bahl finished with 200 passing yards, completing 13-of-26 attempts with no interceptions. Martin hauled in six catches for 134 yards. Sophomore linebacker Paul Moses led the Miami defense with a game-best 12 tackles, including five solo tackles.
There is little rest for the RedHawks who return to action on Thursday, October 29, hosting the Buffalo Bulls at 7:30 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
