OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior hockey forward Alex Gacek and junior field hockey midfielder Geagy Pritchard are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 5-11.
While playing with the highly billed Anthony Louis and Jack Roslovic, it was Gacek's dogged effort that drove Miami's offensive engine against defending national champion Providence on opening weekend. Gacek assisted on four of the RedHawks' five goals for the weekend, including all four of their even strength tallies. The senior forward entered the series with five career multi-point games and dished out two assists on back-to-back nights. His first helper on Saturday gave Miami a 1-0 lead while his secondary helper on Chris Joyaux's third period game-tying goal set the stage for Miami to outlast Providence in the first 3-on-3 overtime game in NCAA history. Gacek also finished +4 in the series.
This is the first time this season and in his career that Gacek has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week.
Pritchard was a main catalyst in the RedHawks going 2-0 this past week. First up, on Friday, she collected two goals, including the game-winner in a 3-0 triumph over Ball State. In the team's most recent contest against Big Ten opponent Rutgers, Pritchard matched Friday's performance with another two-goal effort on the way to a 7-1 drubbing of the Scarlet Knights.
After her performance this past weekend, the junior is currently tied for second on the team in both goals (7) and points (15). Pritchard's 15 points has already matched her total offensive output from a season ago. With three regular season games left on the docket, Pritchard has the chance to set new career high in goals, points and assists.
This is the first time this season and and in her career that Pritchard has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, October 19.
