OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week men’s basketball junior guard Eric Washington and women’s basketball senior guard Courtney Larson are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Dec. 29-Jan. 4.
Washington spearheaded Miami to a pair of wins last week, the first back-to-back wins for the RedHawks since February 2014, and MU’s third straight home win. Washington poured in 23 points to lead all scorers and added a team-high seven boards in the RedHawks’ 66-61 win against UMKC. It was his second 20-plus point outing of the season and one off his career high. He shot a scorching 80 percent from the floor against the ‘Roos, hitting 8-of-10 field goals and notching a career high for field goals. His seven boards also were a career-best. Washington hit four free throws over the final 32 seconds to help seal the win. He was one of four RedHawks to score in double figures in Miami’s 69-46 win against Capital, posting 13 points and adding seven assists. For the week, Washington averaged 18.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 4.0 apg while shooting a sizzling 61.9 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
This is the first time in his career that Washington has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week.
Larson continued to be the stabilizing force in Miami's backcourt. Averaging 11.0 points per game, she shot 66.7 percent from the field (8-for-12), including 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from behind the arc. Larson had eight points, three rebounds and four assists in Miami's win over Davidson on Monday. She followed that up with a team leading 14 points, six rebounds and three assists against Toledo on Saturday.
This is the first time in her career that Larson has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor.
