Men’s Basketball
Last Week: An inspired team effort propelled Miami to a 60-55 win at Northern Illinois on Saturday. Senior guard Will Sullivan sunk all four of his free throws down the stretch to secure the RedHawks’ first road win of the season. (Recap) A strong first half had Miami out in front, but Western Michigan scored 48 second-half points to top the RedHawks 69-58 on Wednesday night. (Recap) This Week: Miami heads to Toledo for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, Jan. 25 on ESPN3. Saturday the RedHawks host Ball State at 3:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the MU women tipping off at 1 p.m. One ticket gets fans into both games. Saturday is a McFamily and Friends Day with a pre-purchase ticket package that includes four tickets and four McDonald’s Extra Value Meals for just $30. Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (3-15 overall, 0-7 MAC) dropped a pair of MAC games on the road. The RedHawks had a solid defensive effort, but struggled offensively as Eastern Michigan took a 56-38 victory on Wednesday evening in Ypsilanti. (Recap) Miami nearly overcame a nightmarish first half with a 44-point effort in the second half, but Bowling Green was able to hold on to take a 66-53 victory on Saturday. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks are home for two games this week. On Wednesday Miami welcomes Ball State to Millett Hall for a 7 p.m. contest. That is the next Dollar Days game and all tickets are only $1 with select concessions only $2. On Saturday the ‘Hawks host Western Michigan at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team. Prior to the contest is the annual Kids Fest promotion. Several varsity and club teams will be on hand to demonstrate their sports and give children a chance to participate.
Hockey
Last Week: The No. 9 RedHawks played their first home games since Dec. 6 when they hosted No. 11 Denver in a rematch of last year’s NCHC Tournament title game. Riley Barber’s short-handed goal midway through the first period staked MU to a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, but DU scored 41 seconds into the second period and 30 ticks into the third to end up posting a 3-1 victory in Friday’s series opener (Recap). Cody Murphy provided a big spark the next night, having a hand in all four Red and White tallies with two goals and two assists as they rebounded with a 4-1 victory (Recap). This Week: Miami travels to Kalamazoo to renew hostilities with long-time rival Western Michigan on Saturday.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Season high scores for both its short and free skate programs catapulted the Miami senior team to a third-place finish among an 11-team field at the Mozart Cup. Miami finished with a combined score of 169.24 at the international event where it was one of two teams representing the United States. (Recap) This Week: Miami’s collegiate and junior teams next compete at the Midwestern Championships Jan. 29-30 in Edina, Minn. The RedHawk senior team is idle from completion until the U.S. National Championships Feb. 26-28 in Providence, R.I.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Last Week: Ten individual first-place finishes spearheaded Miami to a 186-111 win at Ball State on Saturday. Freshman Holly Schuster won two individual events, while new sophomore diver Pei Lin won both diving events in her first meet as a RedHawk. (Recap) Sophomore diver Jenna Karrow was tabbed the MAC Women’s Co-Swimmer of the Week for her performance in Miami’s win against Buffalo the previous week. (Release) This Week: Miami returns to action this weekend when it hosts Toledo at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Last Week: Senior Joe Baumgartner was named the MAC Male Swimmer of the Week following his performance against Buffalo the previous week. (Release) The RedHawks were idle from competition last week. This Week: Miami returns to the pool this weekend at Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Women’s Tennis
Last Week: Miami opened the dual match portion of its season last weekend. The RedHawks dropped 6-1 decision to No. 47-ranked Indiana on Saturday. Freshman Nelli Ponomareva earned a singles win for the RedHawks against the Hoosiers (Recap) On Sunday, the Red and White notched a 6-1 win in their home opener against Eastern Kentucky. (Recap) Andreea Badileanu was named the MAC Single’s Tennis Player of the Week for her performance at the FCGU Invitational the previous weekend. (Release) This Week: Miami heads to Hanover, N.H., to face Boston University on Saturday and Dartmouth on Sunday.
Women’s Track & Field
Last Week: The RedHawks bused three hours north to Bowling Green for the second time in three weeks, competing in the Tom Wright Classic. The RedHawks placed second in the five-team meet with 101 points. Briah Owens punched her ticket to the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships with her 60m time of 7.82, which was good for second. Miami got 18 points by taking the top three spots in the 400m. Emily Hooker led the way with a time of 58.93 in that event and Megan Beaver’s 600m time of 1:36.07 was good for the RedHawks second individual win of the day (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks head to the Penn State Invitational on Saturday.
Miami University Athletics honored five individuals over the weekend when it inducted the Cradle of Coaches Class of 2014-15. Comprising this year’s class is Steve Cady (Ice Hockey/Men’s Soccer/Administrator), Dona Layman (Softball), Ron Masanek(Wrestling), Tracy Smith (Baseball) and Dan Stimson (Cross Country/Track & Field).
