OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week men’s swimming and diving senior Joe Baumgartner and women’s swimming and diving sophomore Jenna Karrow are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Jan. 12-18.
Baumgartner turned in three-individual first-place finishes and also was part of the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay in a 168-132 loss to Buffalo on Jan. 16. In his first event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle, he clocked a time of 1:41.05 to finish first. Baumgartner earned another first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.49. In his last individual race of the meet, the 100-yard freestyle, he touched the wall at an impressive 45.91, almost six-tenths faster than the nearest Buffalo competitor.
Baumgartner also swam the final leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay. He outswam the second-place Buffalo swimmer by .07 seconds to a final team time of 1:23.62. He was named Mid-American Conference Male Swimmer of the Week for his efforts
This is the first time this season and second time in his career that Baumgartner has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Feb. 4-10, 2013.
After an injury prevented her from competing in the Miami Invitational, Karrow came back in a big way against the Bulls. Diving was a key part of the RedHawks’ success, with Karrow (260.25) coming in first place in the one-meter dive and topping her nearest competitor by an impressive 31.28 margin. She also won the three-meter dive with a score of 266.63, which was her best score of the season and bested the next-best finisher by 24.84 points. She was named MAC Female Co-Swimmer of the Week for her efforts.
This is the first time in her career that Karrow has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor.
