Student-Athletes Give Back ... Again

For a second consecutive year, student-athletes at Miami University are not waiting until they graduate to give back to their alma mater; they’re doing it now.
Miami announced that once again, 100 percent of current student-athletes have made a financial gift to the Red & White Club, through an initiative called “Committed Champions.” The idea, which originated with Miami’s RedHawk Council, a student-athlete advisory council, is to encourage student-athletes to show their support of Miami Athletics, the University and their fellow RedHawks. Overall, 527 student-athletes participated in this year’s giving.
"Miami athletics has always been about family,” said Jennie Gilbert, Associate Athletic Director/SWA. “We respect, care and support each other in that manner. Our student-athletes, led by the RedHawk Council, truly care about their family members enough to support the scholarships for each other. They individually realize that they have amazing opportunities here at Miami, competing daily against the brightest minds from around the world in the classrooms and versus the toughest athletes every week in athletic competition. Our student-athletes, collectively, know they can make a difference and pay it forward for others."
Shanyn McIntyre, a senior on the Miami softball team, and a member of the RedHawk Council, views annual giving as a small way to make a major impact.
“RedHawk Council looked at Committed Champions as a great way to bring our whole athletic department together,” said McIntyre. “To be able to say that every single person was willing to contribute to our department’s development is monumental. Through our past success, we hope that we have established a tradition that continuously allows us to showcase the fact that we are relentlessly pursuing to become a top athletic program in the country.”
Any gifts made to the University through the Red & White Club support scholarships for current Miami student-athletes. The funds raised by Miami’s student-athletes in this specific effort will provide books for two student-athletes for a semester.
"Miami student-athletes continue to demonstrate a phenomenal level of leadership,” said Coleman Barnes, Senior Director of Development/Associate Athletics Director. “To see the value in supporting scholarships for their peers for the second consecutive year is a remarkable statement. Hopefully alumni and friends of the program will take great pride in this accomplishment."
