OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week junior hockey goalie Jay Williams and senior volleyball setter/right side hitter Meg Riley are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Nov. 3-9.
Williams continued his sensational start to the season by picking up two wins and stopping 36 of 37 shots in a weekend sweep of Colorado College. The junior goalie started the series by stopping all 21 shots he faced in a 3-0 victory, a game that was tied 0-0 for over 50 minutes. That performance was good for Williams' third career shutout and first since the 2012-13 season. He was sharp again the next night, despite an infrequent work load, in stopping 16 of 17 shots to improve to 7-1 on the season with a 1.64 goals against average (2nd in the NCHC) and a .921 save% (4th).
This is the second time this season and in third time his career that Williams has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it the week of Oct. 13-19.
Riley continued her dominance over the past few weeks as she helped lead Miami to its eighth and ninth straight victories. She recorded a triple-double on Thursday and finished one dig short of another triple-double on Saturday. Riley had 24 kills on an impressive .404 attack percentage from the right side for the week. She assisted on 48 other kills and also had five blocks (two solo and three assisted). She scored 27.5 points on the weekend. Against Bowling Green, Riley had a triple-double with 13 kills, 25 assists and 19 digs. She hit .480 for the match. She followed that up with 11 kills, 23 assists, nine digs and four blocks in a straight set win over Western Michigan on Saturday. For the week, Riley averaged 3.43 kills, 6.86 assists, 4.00 digs, 0.71 blocks and 3.93 points per set.
This is the second time this season and fifth time in her career that Riley has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor. She last won it for the week of Oct. 6-12.
