OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week junior golfer Jack Sparling and volleyball senior setter/right side hitter Meg Riley are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Oct. 6-12.
Sparling was Miami’s top finisher at the Firestone Invitational last week. He finished at one-under par only three shots out of the lead. His tie for third was the best finish of his career. He set a new career low with a six-under par round of 66 in the first round and was the individual leader of the event after that round.
This is the first time in his career that Sparling has earned Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week honor.
Riley was at her overall consistent best this past weekend, contributing offensively, defensively and with her setting. She had 16 kills and hit a robust .342 from the front row when she played the role of the right side hitter. In the back row she switched to setter and had 41 assists and 20 digs on the weekend. In a hard-fought five-set match against Ohio, she just missed a triple-double. She did have a double-double with nine kills, 19 assists and 14 digs. She followed that up with seven kills, 22 assists, six digs and two blocks in a straight-set victory over Kent State on Saturday. She hit .462 in that match.
This is the first time this season and fourth time in her career that Riley has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor. She last won it for the week of Sept. 9-15, 2013.
