Staying Positive
Miami's 56-10 loss to Ohio State was no doubt disappointing for the school's players, coaches and fans.
But while most would like to forget about Saturday's game, there were some positives, or at the very least, learning opportunities that can come of it.
- Zac Dysert had a solid day, completing 31 of 53 passes for 303 yards with a TD and two interceptions. The senior kept his composure even when things weren't going the way he wanted (there had to have been at least a half a dozen drops by the receiving corps). His performance proved that in the coming weeks there will be a lot to look forward to. The guy just makes plays. Nick Harwell led all Miami receivers with eight catches for 120 yards and a TD. Dawon Scott had five catches for 87 yards.
- The offensive line also played well even with starting senior center JoJo Williams out with a bruised leg, which he injured during practice the week leading up to the game. Brad Bednar filled in for Williams and the O-line gave up only two sacks against a stout OSU front four. The run game was non-existent, but I don't think you can blame that on the men up front. The team called only four rushing plays in the first half and never committed to the run at any point during the game. Miami finished with -1 yards rushing on 20 carries. Justin Semmes had five runs for 13 yards, while Robert Williams III had three carries for 10 yards.
- Even though Miami freshman kicker Kaleb Patterson missed a 24-yard chip shot in the first quarter, he bounced back making his second attempt from 22 yards out. In the long run, being that it was his first collegiate game, he should be better off for responding well in a big-time game in front of more than 105,000 fans.
- Finally, there's nothing better than coming off a tough loss than knowing your next game is at home. The RedHawks play Southern Illinois Saturday, Sept. 8. Kickoff is at 1 p.m at Yager Stadium.
Notes
- Republican vice presidential candidate and Miami University graduate Paul Ryan ('92) spoke with the RedHawks before the start of Saturday's game.
- Eleven of Miami's 14 freshmen played against Ohio State.
- Dysert threw for more than 300 yards for the 14th time in his career.
- Nick Harwell caught his 11th career pass of 40 yards or more.
