Miami Men Win Five Events to Capture Miami Invite Title

OXFORD, Ohio - Behind four individual event wins and a relay victory, the Miami University men's track and field team earned first place at the 27th annual Miami Invitational Saturday at George Rider Track in the first of three home meets this year.
The RedHawksk totaled 176 points to win the meet while Ashland was second, 50 points back with 126. Findlay took third with 122 points while Mid-American Conference foe Kent State was fourth with 121.5 points. A total of 14 teams scored at the meet.
Senior Jordan Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) captured first in the 110m hurdles in 14.52 to earn 10 points while freshman JaShawn Combs (Dayton, Ohio) was not far behind in third in 14.71. Fellow freshman Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) was fifth in a personal-best 14.91 while classmate Skyler Coburn (La Porte, Ind.) earned third in the 400m hurdles in 54.69.
Goffena and Coburn, along with sophomores Jahquil Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) and Robert Balzano (Poland, Ohio), won the 4x400m relay in a season-best 3:14.70. Miami placed fourth in the 4x100m relay, as Combs, Chester, juniors Reggie Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jason Bartlett (Wapakoneta, Ohio) combined to clock 43.00, also a season best.
Hargrove claimed runner-up in the 400m dash in a personal-best 47.57, a sliver behind Findlay's John Guagenti, who clocked 47.53. Balzano claimed fifth in the 400m dash in 49.26. Hargrove also took third in the 200m dash in a personal-best 22.07 to combine for 14 points for the `Hawks.
In the 800m run, Miami totaled another 14 points as sophomores Kevin Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio) and Wade Coffin (Willoughby, Ohio) placed second and third, respectively, Brown doing so in a personal-best 1:52.19, which ties for 10th in school history, and Coffin in 1:52.26, also a personal best. Mitchell placed fourth in the 100m dash in a personal-best 11.04.
In the 3000m steeplechase, senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) was the runner-up in a personal-best 9:21.66 while in the 1500m, junior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio), who was sixth in the 800m, crossed in fourth in 3:50.84.
In field action, junior Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) won the pole vault with a personal-best-tying vault of 4.71m/15-5 while Goffena took second clearing the same height in more attempts, also tying a personal best. Mitchell was also victorious, winning the long jump with a season-best-tying leap of 7.01m/23-00, while placing fifth in the triple jump (13.00m/42-8) as well.
The RedHawks were strong in the javelin as freshman Tyler Yee (Florida, N.Y.) won the event with a heave of 61.60m/202-1 while senior Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) was third with a throw of 56.35m/184-10. Sophomore Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) grabbed fifth with a season-best toss of 52.72m/172-11.
Senior Adam Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.) was the runner-up in the shot put, tying a season best with a throw of 16.91m/55-5.75 while classmate Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) took third in the discus with a season-best toss of 52.02m/170-8. Sophomore Matt Gambill (Dover, N.H.) placed third in the high jump with a leap of 1.93m/6-4.
The RedHawks head to Columbus next weekend for the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State April 13-14. Miami then returns home for two consecutive meets - the All-Ohio Championships and the RedHawk Invitational.
