RedHawks Sweep Top Three Spots in 10K at Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio - Under sunny skies and warm temperatures, the Miami University women's track and field team competed in the first three events of its own Miami Invitational Friday night at George Rider Track and sits in first place after day one. The meet is the first of three home meets for the RedHawks this year.
Miami earned all 26 of its points in the 10,000m run, the first time the race was contested at the Miami Invitational in its 27 year history, as the RedHawks grabbed the top three spots. Redshirt freshman Melissa Girgis (Worthington, Ohio) led the way, earning 10 points by crossing first in 37:15.43 in her first collegiate 10K. Two more freshmen claimed second and third in their first 10K as well, as Mattie Moncayo (Lexington, Ohio) finished in 37:40.76 while Amanda Hancock (Lexington, Ky.) clocked 37:51.81.
One section of the 5000m was run Friday night with senior Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) taking sixth in 17:45.61 while freshman Anna Lamb (Granville, Ohio) was right behind in seventh in 17:45.82 in her first 5K. The second section of the 5K leads off the meet Saturday at 11:15 a.m.
The only other event contested Friday was the hammer throw as senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) placed 10th with a heave of 144-7/44.07m.
Miami sits in front of Ashland, who has 20 points after day one, while Findlay is third with 15 points. The meet continues Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with the discus while the second 5K section is the first race on the track. The meet concludes at 5:55 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.
