Miami Women Capture Two Events at RedHawk Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - A pair of RedHawks on the Miami University women's track and field team won events Saturday at the RedHawk Invitational, held at Miami's own George Rider Track, to highlight the team's third and final home meet of the year. The start of the meet was delayed by an hour and a half due to inclement weather while the meet was run under cool and gloomy skies.
Freshman Adaora Anunike (Galena, Ohio) captured first in the shot put, smashing her personal best with a heave of 13.55m/44-4.5, which ranks her ninth in school history in the event. Competing unattached, redshirt junior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) took second with a toss of 12.46m/40-10.5. Gable also claimed second in the hammer throw with a heave of 51.39m/168-7 and second in the discus (44.35m/145-6), which would have been a personal best. Anunike placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 42.68m/140-0.
Sophomore Erin Riley (Avon Lake, Ohio) was Miami's other winner, finishing first in the 800m run in a season-best 2:16.03, winning by over a second in a field of 14.
In the 1500m run, Miami claimed spots two through six, led by freshman Taylor Wickware (Geneva, Ill.) in a personal-best 4:38.29. Classmate Alex Chitwood (Carmel, Ind.) was third in 4:39.12, also a personal best, while senior Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) captured fourth in 4:42.64.
Sophomore Sarah Tirrell (North Canton, Ohio) took third in the 5000m run in 18:47.98 while senior Caroline Kwateng (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also captured third in the 400m dash in a personal-best 1:00.29.
In the pole vault, senior Hannah Tabler (Wapakoneta, Ohio) claimed fifth, clearing 3.50m/11-5.75, while freshman Taylor Brown (Hilliard, Ohio) tied for sixth with a vault of 3.35m/10-11.75. Senior Adrienne Cristofoli (Grove City, Ind.) placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.00m/32-9.75 and was eighth in the pole vault.
Miami now has one final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championships as the RedHawks compete at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, Friday, May 4 in Bloomington, Ind.
