Miami continues a nine-game homestand when it hosts Dayton Wednesday night at McKie Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. The teams were slated to meet Tuesday in Dayton, but the game was cancelled due to scheduling issues.
The RedHawks (17-19) are a season-long four-game losing streak after being swept by Northern Illinois over the weekend. Miami also lost four in a row in early March -- two at Ole Miss and spring break meetings with Villanova and at Miami (Fla.).
Dayton (17-20) has won five of its last seven, but suffered a 9-8 loss to Fordham in the nightcap of a Sunday doubleheader.
Freshman Matt Honchel continues to lead the team in batting with a .410 average. He is currently on an eight-game hitting streak -- his third of eight games or more this year -- and leads the team with 19 multiple-hit games. Honchel had reached base in 21 straight contests.
Junior Kevin Bower has moved into third on the team in hitting (following injured Alex Johnson) at .351, while catchers John Crummy (.340) and Nate Bowles (.328) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Bower leads the club with 33 runs batted in, followed by Bryce Redeker, who has 30 and a team-best four home runs.
As a team, the RedHawks jumped their averaged three points to .301 over the weekend. They have seven players who are hitting .300 or better.
On the mound, Miami sports a 5.09 earned run average, but have 222 strikeouts, an average of 6.2 per game. Opponents are hitting .296 against RedHawk hurlers.
Freshman Clay Cinnamon (0-0, 5.40) will take the mound Wednesday against Dayton. It is his second career start as he limited Wright State to a run and four hits over 4.2 innings last week. Overall, he has totalled 8.1 innings over five appearances, giving up five runs and 12 hits. Cinnamon has walked five and fanned three.
Dayton will counter with a freshman as well. Denton Sagerman is making his first career start and 10th appearance overall. He has allowed 14 earned runs (18 total) in 12.2 innings for a 9.95 ERA.
