ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: After a 26-day break for the holiday season, Miami (11-9-2, 7-7-2-1 CCHA) returned to the ice with a vengence, sweeping No. 15 Michigan State in East Lansing. On Friday night, freshman Jimmy Mullin scored 1:24 into overtime to give the RedHawks a 2-1 victory over the Spartans. Senior goaltender Connor Knapp made 33 saves for Miami. (RECAP) The next night, Knapp stopped all 20 shots he faced, leading Miami to a 4-0 win. The RedHawks killed all 13 MSU power plays during the weekend, including eight in the series finale. (RECAP) This Week: The RedHawks stay on the road for another CCHA series, travelling to Lake Superior State. Miami is seeking to avenge a Laker sweep in Oxford earlier this year. Faceoffs are slated for 7:35 p.m. on Friday and 7:05 on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami suffered a pair of close losses during the week to two very tough opponents. On Monday, the RedHawks ventured to Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt and dropped a hard-fought decision. Freshman guard Brian Sullivan drained eight 3-pointers to tie for third on Miami's single-game charts and Julian Mavunga recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. (RECAP) The Mid-American Conference season opened on Saturday at home with one of the East Division favorites visiting Millett Hall. Akron used a 17-7 run midway through the second half to reverse a seven-point deficit, then broke a 58-58 tie with five straight points to earn a 65-60 win. Mavunga posted another double-double, the 23rd of his career, with 23 points and 14 rebounds. (RECAP) This Week: Miami continues play on the East side of the league with a trip to Kent State on Wednesday before hosting Buffalo at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: The RedHawks continued as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning all three outings in a six-day span, to extend their streak to eight games, tied for ninth in Division I. The week started on Monday with a 61-50 victory at Robert Morris. The Miami defense was key, as it limited the Colonials to 24 percent shooting (17-for-70) for the contest. Courtney Osborn led the way with 20 points, while Kirsten Olowinski had a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds. (RECAP) The road trip continued to Akron for the Mid-American Conference opener on Wednesday and featured one of the most exciting games in recent memory. Junior guard Courtney Osborn set MAC and school records with 48 points, leading Miami to an improbable 95-85 overtime win over the Zips. The 48 points were also the most scored by any player in a NCAA Division I basketball game this season. Osborn sparked a remarkable turnaround for the RedHawks, who scored only 17 points on 5-for-32 shooting in the first half. A 57-point onslaught in second half put Miami in front, but a three-pointer at the buzzer by the Zips sent the game into overtime. That just delayed the inevitable as the Red and White poured in 21 points in the extra frame to secure the victory. (RECAP)Saturday afternoon, the RedHawks kept rolling with a wire-to-wire, 72-51, victory over Buffalo. The win was the 10th straight at Millett Hall dating back to last season. Osborn continued her amazing week of scoring, leading Miami with 23 points. Kirsten Olowinski had another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. (RECAP) This Week: Miami hosts perennial power Kent State to Millett Hall on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff, then travels to Ohio to face the Bobcats Sunday afternoon.
SYNCHRONIZED SKATING
Last Week: The junior team got an early start to the 2012 portion of the schedule, finishing fifth among nine -teams at the Junior World Qualifiers in Lowell, Mass. The RedHawks posted a combined score of 114.00, sitting fourth after Friday's short program with a score of 41.62. However, on Saturday, they dropped a spot with a sixth-best free skate score of 72.38. (RECAP) This Week: The RedHawk collegiate and senior teams return to the ice this weekend at the Mid-America Championships, while the junior team is off until the Mozart Cup International in Salzburg, Austria Jan. 27-29.
Several other teams return to action after the break this week. Both swimming and diving teams hit the pool on Friday with home duals against Cincinnati. Action starts at 5 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The tennis team opens its dual season in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday with a match at Vanderbilt. The RedHawks then face Memphis in neutral-site play on Sunday. Women's Track and Field travels to Bowling Green on Saturday for the BGSU Women's Team Challenge.
The athletic department, itself, made news during the week as well. On Thursday, the department released its fall semester grade report with 202 RedHawks topping a 3.0 GPA, including 18 with a perfect 4.0. Overall, Miami student-athletes combined for a 3.15 GPA during the fall. (RELEASE) The same day, Miami announced its 43rd Hall of Fame Class with seven individuals set for induction on Feb. 11 -- Kevyn Adams '96 (hockey), Gary Cooper '73 (baseball), Renee DeGraff '84 (volleyball), Joe Shaw '64 (men's swimming), Amanda Sokolow '99 (field hockey), Tonia Stubbs '87 (women's basketball) and Dustin Swinehart '96 (men's soccer). (RELEASE). And did you get a chance to see Millett Hall's new videoboard at the doubleheader on Saturday? Information on its features was posted on Friday. (RELEASE)
Finally, congratulations to sophomore Sarah Mueller for earning a spot on the MAC's field hockey All-Academic Team. (RELEASE)
