The month of January comes to a close this week which means the winter sports seasons are in full swing.
ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: Miami (15-11-2, 11-9-2-1 CCHA)wrapped up a four-game homestand with a split against 19th-ranked Northern Michigan over the weekend. The RedHawks fell 2-1 in the opener before responding with a 6-0 thrashing on Saturday night. On Friday, the RedHawks held a 41-13 advantage in shots, but were unable to erase an early two-goal deficit. Freshman forward Blake Coleman tallied MU's lone goal 1:53 into the final frame. (RECAP) The loss seemed to inspire the RedHawks the next night. Senior goaltender Cody Reichard tied the school record with his 12th career shutout, second of the season, while junior forward Reilly Smith became the 47th player in school history to reach 100 career points a milestone of his own in the game, as his assist on Miami's first goal gave him 100 points for his career, becoming just the 47th player in program history to reach the century club, doing so in 108 games. Alex Wideman scored two goals in the game, doubling his season output so far. (RECAP) This Week: Miami its the road for another big series, taking on Michigan in Ann Arbor.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (16-5, 6-2) earned a split of two games this week as cross-division action continues. The RedHawks hit the road on Wednesday against perennial power Toledo, but fell 79-66 after a hot-shooting second half by the Rockets. Maggie Boyer led the Red and White with 20 points, while Courtney Osborn tallied 17. Miami shot 34.4 percent for the game, while Toledo hit on 54.2 percent of its shots. That included a blistering 69.0 percent in the second half. (RECAP) Miami got back on the winning track on Saturday, using a strong second half to defeat Ball State, 72-61. Trailing by two at the break, the RedHawks opened with nine straight points, then kept the Cardinals at bay. Osborn, who started the run with a game-tying layup, finished the contest with a game-high 27 points. (RECAP) This Week: Miami hits the road for a pair of games this week, facing Central Michigan on Wednesday and Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (5-14, 1-6) saw its losing skid reach four games this with a pair of losses to West Division teams. Wednesday night at home, the RedHawks closed a nine-point deficit with under five minutes left to just two, but could never gain the lead in a 63-61 loss to Toledo. Senior forward Julian Mavunga posted his 10th double-double of the season -- and 24th of his career -- with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the RedHawks. The senior from Indianapolis added four assists to his stats line, while freshman guard Brian Sullivan added 13 points. (RECAP) Despite a barrage of three-pointers -- 15 in total -- Miami dropped a 73-64 decision at Western Michigan on Saturday. Sullivan led the RedHawks with 20 points, including six treys. The 15 3-pointers for Miami tied for the second-most in a single game in school history. Mavunga tallied another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. (RECAP) This Week: Miami returns home on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. matchup against Eastern Michigan before traveling to Ball State on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Last Week: Miami improved to 7-2 in dual meets this year with a weekend sweep of MAC rivals Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green over the weekend. Led by junior backstroker Leah Thornton, the RedHawks topped the Eagles, 167-132. Miami got first-place finishes in seven events and took first in both relay races. (RECAP) Thornton, Chelsey Bruington, Bekka Westrick and Nikki Craft each contributed two individual event victories on Saturday for a 178-11 victory over Bowling Green. (RECAP) This Week: Miami wraps up its dual meet schedule Saturday when it hosts archrival Ohio at 1 p.m.
MEN's SWIMMING
Last Week: Seniors James Beres and Brendan Melling each won two events to lead Miami (5-6) to a 134-107 victory at Ball State on Saturday. Beres placed first on both the one- and three-meter boards, while Melling finished first in the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. (RECAP) This Week: Miami hosts Eastern Michigan Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Nixon Aquatic Center in the final dual meet action of the season. The RedHawks host the MAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on March 1-3.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: Facing several nationally-ranked teams and schools from power conferences, the women's track and field team did not back down as RedHawks set several personal bests and top-10 marks at the Rod McCravy Memorial. Senior Rachael Clay continued her stellar season by claiming fifth in the 400m dash in a personal-best 55.38 seconds, the second-best time in school history. She won her heat and finished behind three SEC runners and Ohio State's Shaniqua McGinnis overall. Senior Diona Graves qualified for the final in the 60m dash, while Junior Layne Baggett also reached the final in the 60m hurdles. In the mile run, freshman Elisa Frazier took ninth in a personal-best and Miami season-best 4:59.11, ranking 10th in school history. (FRIDAY RECAP) (SATURDAY RECAP) This Week: The RedHawks are off this weekend, but return to action Feb. 10-11 at the Akron Invitational.
SYNCHRONIZED SKATING
Last Week: The junior team took to the ice this weekend, finishing seventh among the 15-team field at the Mozart Cup in Salzburg, Austria. The RedHawks, representing the United States of America at the event, posted a combined score of 108.22. Miami skated a clean program in Sunday's free skate, themed Dancing in Paris, for a score of 69.75. (RECAP) This Week: The senior team is up next, heading to the French Cup to represent the U.S. this weekend.
After a weekend off, the tennis team returns to action Sunday, facing Kentucky at 4 p.m. in Lexington.
