Oxford was a busy place for Miami Athletics this week as many of the active teams competing at home.
ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: Miami continued its post-holiday surge with a weekend sweep of No. 8 Western Michigan at Steve:Cady Arena, winning 3-1 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday. The 20th-ranked RedHawks (14-10-2, 10-8-2-1 CCHA) are now 5-1 since the break and are within three points of first place in the CCHA standings. On Friday, junior Reilly Smith provided all the offense with his second hat trick of the season. (RECAP) The following night, senior Connor Knapp recorded his 10th career shutout and four different RedHawks found the net. Knapp stopped all 22 shots he faced against the Broncos. (RECAP) This Week: Miami continues its homestand against Northern Michigan. Faceoffs are slated for 7:35 p.m. on Friday and 7:05 on Saturday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (15-4, 5-1) saw its 10-game winning streak come to a close, but still earned a split of its two games. It was a battle of the last two undefeated teams in the MAC on Thursday with Bowling Green escaping with a 61-58 victory. The RedHawks erased a 13-point deficit, but the Falcons responded in the final three minutes. Sophomore Hannah Robertson led all players with a career-high 19 points and added nine rebounds, while junior forward Kirsten Olowinski notched her ninth double-double of the season and the 26th of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. (RECAP) In the opening game of interdivisional play Sunday, Courtney Osborn scored 21 of her 34 points in the opening half, lifting Miami to a 82-67 victory over Western Michigan. The scoring total was the sixth-highest single game effort in school history. (RECAP) This Week: Miami hits the road for its next contest, traveling to Toledo Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip. The RedHawks return home on Saturday for a noon game against Ball State.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: The RedHawks continue to suffer hard-luck losses this season, dropping a pair of games by 12 points combined. In the opener, Miami (5-12, 1-4) nearly erased a 13-point second-half deficit against Bowling Green, but fell just short, 65-57, Wednesday evening at Millett Hall. Senior Julian Mavunga paced the RedHawks with 17 points and a career best seven assists, while sophomore forward Jon Harris and junior center Vince Lagarza each grabbed a team-best five rebounds. (RECAP) Saturday, Miami saw an exactly opposite scenario, leading nearly the entire game before falling 69-65 at Ohio. Freshman Brian Sullivan paced the RedHawks with 16 points, while sophomore center Drew McGhee posted 10 points and a career-high six rebounds. (RECAP) This Week: Miami begins interdivisional play this week, welcoming Toledo to Millett Hall Wednesday night at 7. The RedHawks also travel to Western Michigan for a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Last Week: Two individual victories by junior Bekka Westrick and eight more first-place finishes by eight other athletes helped Miami (5-2) top unbeaten Ball State Friday night, 178-122. In addition to Westrick's victories in the 50 freestyle (24.03) and the 100 free (52.28), she also swam with Miami's two victorious relay units. Her lead-off leg of 53.01 in the 400 freestyle relay and her anchor leg of 23.53 in the 200 medley relay both helped Miami's squads to touch the wall first. (RECAP) This Week: Miami hits the road again on the weekend for a pair of meets. The RedHawks compete at Eastern Michigan on Friday (4 p.m.), then at Bowling Green on Saturday (1 p.m.).
MEN's SWIMMING
Last Week: Miami came up short in a pair of dual meets this week, falling to Cleveland State on Friday and Buffalo on Saturday. Against the Vikings, senior Brendan Melling scored 17 individual points with one first-place finish and two seconds, but the RedHawks fell 179-120. Melling placed first in the 1000 freestyle, while divers Jim Beres (three-meter) and Mike Grainger (one-meter) also earned event wins. (RECAP) Melling added 14 individual points and Beres 13 in a 165-127 loss at Buffalo on Saturday. Chris Hoppler also tallied 13 points. Melling placed first in the 400 individual medley with Miami's diving tandem of Beres and Hoppler continuing their dominance. Beres was victorious on the one-meter board while Hoppler placed second., Then, Hoppler captured top honors in the three-meter event and Beres took second. (RECAP) This Week: Coach Pete Lindsay's team will next swim on Saturday at Ball State, with the first event scheduled for 1 p.m.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: It was a record-setting weekend for Miami's Indoor Track and Field team at the Gladstein Invitational, held at Indiana University's Gladstein Field House. Senior Diona Graves, junior Katie Scannell, senior Rachael Clay and freshman Charlotte Myers combined to clock a time of 3:43.97 en route to winning the 21-team race. They broke the previous record of 3:45.14 set last year. Clay also won the 400m dash invitational final on Friday. Graves won her second race, the 60m dash finals, Saturday in 7.58 seconds. (FRIDAY RECAP) (SATURDAY RECAP) This Week: The RedHawks are back in action this weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial, hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
TENNIS
Last Week: Miami opened up its 2012 home schedule with a pair of dominating performances against local rivals. The RedHawks (2-2) defeated Xavier 7-0 on Saturday and Cincinati 6-1 on Sunday, with both matches being played at the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton. Stephanie Danesis, Nimisha Mohan and Christine Guerrazzi each won both singles and doubles matches she played. Alix Thurman won both her singles matches, while Jessica Parr earned a pair of doubles wins. (SATURDAY RECAP) (SUNDAY RECAP) This Week: Miami is off this week, but begins a string of seven straight matches on the road Feb. 4 at Kentucky. The action begins at 4 p.m.
The junior synchronized skating team returns to action Friday through Sunday at the Mozart Cup International in Salzburg, Austria.
