NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Katherine Castro posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles, but it was Miami's only point in a 6-1 season-opening loss at No. 15 Vanderbilt on Saturday. The No. 2 doubles team of Stephanie Danesis and Jessica Parr were also victorious 9-8, but the Commodores were still able to earn the doubles point.
Vandy (2-0) took the first two doubles matches before Danesis and Parr were able to eke out the win at No. 2. They captured the tiebreaker 7-5.
The first five singles matches to finish went to the Commodores, giving them the team victory. But, despite being the last to finish, Castro kept the pressure on, winning her first collegiate duals match.
"I thought that we brought good energy in doubles, but at times did not execute when we had opportunities," Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu said. "I was happy to see Steph and Jess setting the tone and playing really solid doubles. We just need to do a better job of staying mentally tough through the entire match and maintaining our concentration, regardless of the score.
Miami returns to action tomorrow on the same courts when it faces Memphis in a neutral-site match.
