OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawks continued to find success at the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Invitational with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17) victory over Radford Saturday morning. Miami improves to 6-2 with the win, while the Highlanders fall to 3-5.
Two kills from Christina Menche helped stake the Red and White to a 6-3 lead in set one. Cassie Farrell continued her strong play from the night before as she recorded two kills to help expand the advantage to 12-6. Radford scored five consecutive points to pull within one, before Meg Riley stopped the run with a kill of her own. The Highlanders would eventually take the lead at 17-16, but a kill from Farrell and a service ace by Amy Kendall were part of a 4-0 run that gave RedHawks the advantage back for good. Radford would get as close as one at 21-22, but two kills from Lisa Treadway would create set point. After a Miami setting error gave one back, the RedHawks won the set, 25-22 on a serving error.
Kills from five different RedHawks put Miami in control of set two early. In front 13-9, kills from Amy Raseman and Jenn Caylor, along with a block by Farrell and Madison Dodd helped expand the lead to eight at 18-10. With the score 21-14, the RedHawks scored the final four points of the set, finishing it off with back-to-back kills by Caylor and Raseman.
Radford took the third set by a score of 25-19. The big run came in the back-and-forth set when the score was tied at 16. A 7-2 run by the Highlanders would prove to be too much to overcome, as Riley would put down another kill, but Radford answered to earn the victory.
Two kills from Chelsea Visk helped put Miami in front, 5-0, in set four. Two more kills from Farrell helped expand that advantage to 10-3. A 5-1 run by Radford would pull the Highlanders to within three at 8-11, but several attack errors would allow the RedHawks push it back to seven at 19-12. In front 21-16, two Radford service errors and a kill from Caylor would give Miami match point. The Red and White would then take the match on a Highlander setting error.
Farrell led the offensive attack with 12 kills. Lisa Treadway had her first double-double of the season, recording 10 kills and 12 digs. Caylor had 17 digs, while Madision Hardy had 16. Miami out dug Radford, 69-55 and held the Highlanders to a .109 hitting percentage. Riley led the RedHawks with 27 assists.
Miami will attempt to win its home tournament for the first time since 1999 when it takes on Alabama A&M later Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
