WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Miami University field hockey team will look to get back on the winning track over the weekend as it heads to New Jersey for a pair of games. First up is a contest at Monmouth on Friday at 3 p.m. The RedHawks will then travel to Rutgers on Sunday for a noon start.
Miami fell to a couple of tough Big Ten teams last weekend. The RedHawks dropped their season opener to Indiana, 3-0, on Friday. Returning home to face Northwestern on Sunday, Miami came out firing during the first part of the contest, but was again unable to find the back of the net in a 4-0 defeat. Despite the setbacks, sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mueller had a solid week, making 14 saves.
Monmouth is 0-2 on the young season. Last weekend it was shut out by fifth-ranked Syracuse, 4-0, on Saturday. On Wednesday, the Hawks fell in their home opener to Hofstra, 4-3. Senior Morganne Firmstone led Monmouth with two goals in that contest. This will be the first meeting between the RedHawks and the Hawks.
Rutgers is 1-1 after defeating James Madison, 5-1, last Friday and falling to Delaware, 4-2, on Monday. The Scarlet Knights will face William and Mary on Friday before their game against the RedHawks Sunday. Rutgers has been led so far by sophomore forward Gia Nappi. She has two goals and an assist for five points on the year. Rutgers defeated Miami in the teams' only meeting by a 1-0 score on Sept. 28, 1984.
Miami returns home next weekend when it welcomes third-ranked Virginia on Friday, Sept. 9 for a 3 p.m. game. The RedHawks will host Michigan State on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. The Cavaliers and Spartans will face each other in a neutral site game on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
