OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami's 2011-12 athletic year formally opened Sunday night with the Athletic Department's annual welcome reception and picnic dinner. The event took place at Hall Auditorium on campus.
The night's festivities started with a welcome by RedHawk Council executive board members Lisa Treadway (volleyball), Amanda Seeley (field hockey) and Bryan Beaver before Head Football Coach Don Treadwell delivered the keynote address. He challenged this year's upperclassmen to be leaders of their teams, while remembering his days as a student-athlete.
Director of Athletics Brad Bates highlighted some unique insight to this year's crop of athletes, then announced the formation of a new annual award for student-athletes, the Darrell C. Hedric Award. The male equivalent of the Leann Grimes Davidge Award, it will be given to a student-athlete based on athletic accomplishments, scholarship, community service and leadership.
A highlight video was shown before the athletes shared dinner with members of the athletic department coaches and staff.
