Captains' Corner is a weekly update from a captain or leader of one of the RedHawks' 19 teams that will run every other Thursday throughout the academic year. Today's update is from field hockey's Olivia Miller, a junior midfielder from Prospect, Ky., who prepped at Sacred Heart Academy and is majoring in speech pathology. Check back on Sept. 8 for the next edition of Captains' Corner.
As a returning player for the Miami field hockey team, I have seen that a lot has changed in the past six months. Coming in with a new head coach, assistant coach, strength and conditioning coach and academic coordinator, it definitely feels like a fresh start. While it has been difficult getting acclimated into a new system, I feel our team has really stuck together and created a team cohesion that is stronger than previous years. Coming into preseason there have been many expectations from the coaching staff and our team came very well prepared and set the standards high since day one. It has been a challenging and vigorous preseason and we are very optimistic this weekend against Indiana University, in seeing how all our hard work will pay off.
In the short time that we have come to know (head coach) Inako (Puzo) and (assistant coach) Chip (Rogers), they have provided us with advice that is valuable on and off the field. We do have one familiar face, our assistant coach Linz (Markwart). We are excited to continue to grow with in the years to come. While our coaches have really challenged us on the field to reach new heights as a team, they have also pushed us to learn more about ourselves as individuals outside of field hockey. Our coaches have shown us in such a short time that they care about us as individuals, and that there is more than just a player-coach relationship.
This year the Miami field hockey family has collaborated a mission statement that expresses what our team is really all about.
"The Miami Field Hockey Family, in the pursuit of excellence, develops lifelong champions of character through commitment, Love and Honor for one another."
We are very excited for this upcoming season to see what this team is capable of doing. We believe the possibilities are endless.
