OXFORD, Ohio -- Several Miami Baseball players are enjoying stellar summers, with four earning all-star appearances in their respective leagues. Two RedHawks were tabbed for the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, while a pair earned distinction in the Coastal Plain League.
Dan Walsh and Kevin Bower participated in last night's GLSCL All-Star Game at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Walsh, a member of the Stark County Terriers, leads the league in batting with a .427 average. In 27 games, he has 38 hits in 89 at-bats, including six doubles. He is also tied for the lead with 18 runs batted in. Bower is hitting .314 for the Cincinnati Steam. Eight of his 22 hits have gone for extra bases, including four doubles and three home runs. He has driven in 18 runs.
Ryan Brenner and Brooks Fiala, Miami's two entrants in the Coastal Plain League, were each selected to play in that league's all-star game. They are teammates for the Edenton Steamers, ranked as the No. 1 collegiate summer league team in the country by Perfect Game this week. The Steamers are 29-9 overall.
Brenner will start in the outfield for the Nationals team. He has started 32 games, batting .289 with a pair of doubles. He leads the league in stolen bases with 24 in 30 attempts. Fiala ranks third in the CPL with a 1.78 ERA. He is 3-1 over six starts, allowing seven earned runs in 35.1 innings. He has 30 strikeouts, compared to just four walks, and is holding opponents to a .185 batting average.
