OXFORD, Ohio -- In one of the closest votes so far for the All-Decade Team, Tom Crabtree narrowly beat Matt Brandt to win the spot for Tight End.
Crabtree entered Miami in 2004 and redshirted after playing for four years at Bloom-Carroll HS. The following season he became a reserve tight end, but was often featured on special teams. During his debut versus Ohio State, Crabtree forced two special team fumbles. It was the start of a stellar career both offensively and on special teams.
Crabtree's best offensive year was in 2007, registering 15 receptions for 139 yards and one touchdown. He finished his career in 2008 with over 40 catches, signing a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in May. He earned a spot on the practice squad, but was released after the third regular-season game.
Being cut from the team didn't defer Crabtree. The same season, he signed with the Green Bay Packers as part of the practice squad. During the 2010 off-season, he fought hard in training camp and made the roster as the third tight end. Crabtree's regular-season stats included four receptions for over 15 yards per catch. His first NFL touchdown was record in the wildcard game against the Philadelphia Eagles, after a seven yard pass from Aaron Rodgers.
Crabtree and the Packers went on to win Super Bowl XLV over former RedHawk Ben Roethlisberger.
