ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - Nathan Sutherland closed out his historic Miami career with a 77 in the final round of the NCAA Central Regional Saturday. Sutherland finished with a final score of 17-over par 230 and was in a tie for 61st place. Lion Kim of Michigan and Luke Guthrie of Illinois tied for the individual title at eight under par, while the Wolverines as a team won the regional with a final score of 11-under par.
After opening his final round on the back nine with three pars, two bogies and a double bogey would cut into his momentum. Sutherland recovered to par the final three holes of the back nine before recording two more bogies to begin the front nine. He then closed out his round solidly, recording pars in each of his last seven holes.
"It wasn't Nathan's best day, but it doesn't have any impact on what was one of the greatest seasons in Miami history," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "His legacy at Miami will be one of prolonged impact and constancy. I hope no matter what he does in the future that he will always look back at his time here and realize the impact he has had on this program."
Sutherland finishes his 2010-11 season with a 72.61 strokes per round average. It is the second-lowest average in school history (to only Kyle Voska's 71.20 in 1997-98). His 73.63 career scoring average is also the second lowest in Miami history, second to only Lee Curry's (2000-01)73.40 average.
