ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Miami tennis team went to the wire with UCF Monday afternoon, but dropped the deciding match in a 4-3 loss to the Golden Knights. The contest was the first that the RedHawks had played outside this season after 12 straight indoors.
The Golden Knights (5-5) captured the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 3. Included in the victories was an 8-5 upset of No. 80 Megan Martzolf and Stephanie Danesis by Genevieve Lorbergs and Courtney Griffith. Miami's Jessica Parr and Riekie Honiball continued to shine together, winning for the fifth time in six outings.
Miami (8-5) captured the top three singles flights while UCF won at Nos. 5 and 6 to leave the match tied at 3-3. Danesis, playing No. 1 after a lineup change, won 6-1, 7-5, while Anastasia Dracheva was a 6-2, 7-6 victor at No. 2. Martzolf dominated 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. When Honiball and Cara Wald lost their matches, it left the team's fate in the hands of freshman Nimisha Mohan. She had dropped the first set 6-4, but forced a third set 6-4. The decider went all the way to 6-6 and a tiebreaker, before Josephine Heraldson led the Knights to the win, 7-4.
The RedHawks plays the second match on their spring break trip Wednesday at Jacksonville.
