Tennis Gains Ranking, Sweeps Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A day after earning its highest national ranking ever, Miami flexed its muscle, sweeping all nine matches in a 7-0 win over Jacksonville. The RedHawks entered the match listed as No. 68 in the Campbell's/ITA Tennis computer rankings.
Miami, which finished its non-conference slate 9-5, took all three doubles matches to open a 1-0 lead. Megan Martzolf and Stephanie Danesis, ranked 80th in the country, took an 8-3 decision at No. 1, while Cara Wald and Anastasia Dracheva won 8-4 at No. 3. Riekie Honiball and Jessica Parr completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the second flight.
The RedHawks won in straight sets in four singles matches. Wald whitewashed her opponent 6-0, 6-0, while Marzolf dropped only three games at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0. Dracheva dropped five games in a 6-3,6-2 decision, while Nimisha Mohan rolled to a 6-1 win after being forced to a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) in the her opening set at No. 5.
Honiball and Danesis each lost her opening set 6-4 before rebounding. Honiball lost just three more games, 6-2, 6-1, while Danesis cruised 6-3, 6-2.
"I was happy to see us win all three doubles for the first time in a while," Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu said. "Overall, we did a good job dealing with the wind. We had very good shot selection today.
Miami returns to action next weekend when it opens Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks host Toledo and Eastern Michigan on March 25 and 26.
