Eick Paces RedHawks in Season-Opening Meet

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--In its first meet of the outdoor season, Miami University men's track and field team boasted six first-place finishes as the RedHawks competed at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational. There was no team scoring at the meet.
Sophomore Jarrod Eick was a two-time winner at the meet, earning a first-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:52.98 and also placing first in the 1500-meter run in a time of 3:51.43. Eick's win in the 800 led a host of RedHawks who finished among the top five in the event. Sophomore Jack Spilman placed third (1:53.53), followed by freshman Wade Coffin in fourth (1:55.24) and freshman Kevin Brown in fifth (1:55.56).
Miami had three of the top four finishers in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Jahquil Hargrove won the event in a time of 48.59. Freshman Robert Balzano finished third (50.50) and freshman Nate Davis placed fourth (50.53).
The RedHawks had a one-two finish in the javelin with junior John Brockman winning the event by more than 10 feet with a throw of 197-07. Junior Matt Rudin followed in second place with a throw of 187-02. Rudin also finished second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15-01.00.
Senior David Serrano won the high jump, clearing a height of 6-08.75., while senior Matt Losi won the triple jump with a jump of 45-00-50.
Senior Michael Perry finished second in the 3000-meter run in a time of 8:30.70, while senior Josh Rees finished third in the long jump with a distance of 22-07.25, senior Michael McCarty finished third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.51 and senior Justinn Eddie finished third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.10.
Miami's 4x100 meter relay team of Eddie, Rees, freshman Sam Spallinger and sophomore Reggie Mitchell placed second in the event in a time of 42.18.
Due to lightning in the area, the women's 200 meter dash, men's and women's steeplechase and the men's and women's 4x400 relays were not contested.
Miami returns to action next week as the team will compete at the Oliver Nikoloff Open in Cincinnati.
