It was a week filled with fantastic finishes and strong performances.

A pair of dramatic comebacks were served up by the men's basketball team (11-12; 6-3 MAC) last week. Miami erased a 14-point first-half deficit against Ball State last Tuesday en route to an 89-75 win. Miami scored 50 second-half points and set a school record for 3-pointers in a game with 16 against the Cardinals. Junior forward Julian Mavunga netted a career-high 27 points and had 11 rebounds, while freshman guard Josh Sewell knocked down 20 points against BSU. (RECAP) It was a furious finish at Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Miami trailed 20 points with 15:24 to play and was down nine points with 1:42 remaining. Freshman forward Jon Harris, nailed four 3-pointers in the final 2:13 of the game, including the game-winner with nearly two seconds left, to lift the RedHawks to a thrilling 58-56 win, its first lead of the game. Eastern Michigan hit a long-range 3-pointer which put the RedHawk comeback in question, but after official review the basket was waved off giving the RedHawks the win. (LINK) Miami hosts Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9 before rounding out its stretch against the MAC West Division at Toledo at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Hockey (16-9-5, 13-7-4-2 CCHA) also had a dramatic come-from-behind win on Friday on its way to a weekend sweep of the Michigan Wolverines. Miami scored three third-period goals to overcome a 2-1 deficit and claim a 4-2 victory against the Wolverines on Friday night at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks were victorious for the first time this season when trailing after two periods. Junior goalie Cody Reichard stopped 30 shots on the night, while junior Matt Tomassoni tallied the game-winner with 4:09 left in the third period to lead the RedHawks. (RECAP) Miami honored former student manager Brendan Burke, who tragically passed away one year ago, with a pre-game tribute followed by a 3-0 blanking of Michigan Saturday to jump back into first place in the CCHA. Before the game began, the RedHawks joined Burke's family at center ice for a video tribute while the crowd fell silent in remembrance. Miami wore special jerseys with a red shamrock and the initials BB on the front. Each player's name read Burke on the back of the sweater. The RedHawks host their final regular-season home series next weekend, Feb. 11-12 against Western Michigan. Friday's game starts at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday has puck drop set for 7:05 p.m.

The award is given annually to one senior student-athlete in several NCAA-sponsored sports and recognizes someone who has had notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Behind a score of 96.91, the collegiate synchronized skating team seized gold at the Midwestern Championships on Friday afternoon in Rochester, Minn. In its final competition before the U.S. National Championships, the RedHawks attacked their Brazilian Carnival-themed program, posting a score more than 10 points better than either of their previous two competitions this season. Miami boasted a 10-point margin over its nearest competitor among the nine-team field with a total element score of 50.51 and a program component score of 46.40. (RECAP) The next synchronized skating team in action for the RedHawks is the senior team Feb. 11-13 at the Spring Cup in Milan, Italy.

The men's swimming and diving team (4-5-1) won its first six individual events, then added two more plus a relay victory en route to posting a 132-104 triumph over Ball State at the Nixon Aquatic Center Saturday. Four of the six seniors who were swimming in their final home pool competition wound up with victories. Darin Smith won the 1000 freestyle (9:55.89), John Eick touched first in the 50 freestyle, Ryan Neff was victorious in the 400 individual medley and Jason Hass placed first in the 200 butterfly. This class of Miami seniors has compiled a dual meet record of 12-7-3 at home. (RECAP) The RedHawks will now begin tapering for the Mid-American Conference Championships, March 4-6, in Carbondale, Ill.

The women's swimming and diving team (9-2; 4-1 MAC) suffered a 163-135 loss to Ohio in its final regular-season meet. The RedHawks got individual victories from Kelsey Vehr in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, Maegan O'Connor in the 200 butterfly and Megan Brunn in the 200 individual medley. (RECAP) Miami has 18 days of racing practice before it competes in the MAC Championships in Athens, Feb. 23-26.

Women's basketball (10-13; 2-8 MAC) dropped a 100-84 decision to Central Michigan last Wednesday evening. Kirsten Olowinski paced the RedHawks with 18 points and 16 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks faced MAC leader Toledo but came up short, 76-65. (RECAP) Miami is off for the week before hitting the road for a 2 p.m. game at Western Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Miami's women's tennis team (4-2) suffered its first two losses of the season. Megan Martzolf won her 28th straight dual match dating back to last year and Stephanie Danesis stayed undefeated in 2011, but Miami suffered its first setback, 5-2 at 30th-ranked Iowa. (RECAP) Miami captured the doubles point for just the second time in four matches but dropped all six singles matches in a 6-1 setback to Kansas State Saturday afternoon. (RECAP) Miami returns to action Sunday, Feb. 13 when it participates in rare doubleheader. The RedHawks are at Michigan State in the morning, before facing Detroit that evening.
The women's track and field team participated at the Meyo Invite at Notre Dame last weekend. There was no team scoring at the event. Junior Rachel Patterson finished in second place in the 5000m run Friday as the top finisher for Miami on the opening day of the Meyo Invitational. (DAY ONE RECAP) Junior Diona Graves finished second in the 200m dash unseeded race in a personal-best 24.89, which ranks her fourth in school history. Senior Katie Lenahan also claimed second in the 800m unseeded race, clocking in at a personal-best 2:10.65, the fourth-fastest time ever by a RedHawk. (DAY TWO RECAP) Miami returns to action next weekend, as it will split its squad, sending half back to Indiana for the Hoosier Hills Invitational, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington on Friday, Feb. 11, while the rest of the team will compete at the two-day Akron Invitational, hosted by the MAC rival Zips Feb. 11-12.
The men's track and field team also is in action this week at the Cedarville Collegiate Invitational on Friday.
The Red & White Club will host its next luncheon at Goggin Ice Center Club Lounge on Wednesday, Feb. 9. Featured speakers for the luncheon are head coaches Enrico Blasi (hockey) and Carla DeGirolamo (synchronized skating) along with student-athletes from each program. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at noon.
